Perkins 6.354
The Perkins 6.354 is a 5.8-litre six-cylinder direct-injection diesel from Peterborough, England (354 cubic inches), built from 1960 until 1996 for trucks, tractors, industry and boats; more than a million were made in Peterborough alone, plus licence builds in other countries. For boats Perkins built it naturally aspirated (6.354) and turbocharged (T6.354, HT6.354), also in inclined versions that fit below a cockpit, and from the late 1970s as the redesigned 6.3544 and T6.3544, whose new block and cylinder head often take different gaskets, pumps and thermostats. Since 1974 the engine number starts with a family code (TC = 6.354, TE = T6.354, TW = 6.3544, TU = T6.3544 …), and the notes below say which versions Perkins lists a part for. From the mid-1980s Perkins replaced the family with the 1000 Series (Phaser), a different engine; some boats also have 6.354s marinised by other firms, whose cooling and exhaust parts may differ from the factory parts listed here.

Perkins publishes no operation manual for the 6.354 online. The schedule comes from Perkins’ 1970 workshop manual (publication 601 SER 1020), which was written for vehicle, agricultural and industrial engines, and from the current guidance on Perkins’ 6.354 Series parts page (oil every 250 h, fuel filters every 500 h). The shorter intervals for boats, the check before every start and the anode advice are dealer guidelines from Foley Engines, a Perkins dealer (Tech Tip 36). Oil and coolant capacities are left out on purpose: the manual gives the sump capacity only for vehicle engines and marine sumps differ, so fill to the dipstick mark.

Good to know
- Read the full engine number before ordering. Since 1974 it starts with the family code: TC for the 6.354, TE for the T6.354, TD and TF for the H6.354 and HT6.354, TW for the 6.3544 and TU for the T6.3544. Older engines carry numbers like 354U251, stamped on the side of the auxiliary drive housing. Perkins lists many parts in several versions for the same engine type, so dealers ask for the full number.91,58,90
- The 6.3544 and T6.3544 of the late 1970s have a redesigned block and cylinder head, so their gasket sets, head gasket and coolant pumps differ from those of the earlier 6.354 and T6.354. Across the family, dealers also sell two thermostat sizes (70 mm on early builds, 54 mm on later ones), two oil-filter heights, two lift pumps (two- or four-bolt flange) and two rear crankshaft seals (rope or lip type): compare with the old part before ordering.85,89,40,20,18,93,58
- The brass end cover of the Jabsco sea-water pump wears, so the impeller no longer seals: flow drops and the impeller blades fail early. If a new impeller does not bring the flow back, replace the end cover as well; dealers sell cover kits for the Jabsco 9990-41. Carry a spare impeller and cover gasket on board.13,9
- Factory-marine 6.354s often have insulated-return electrics, so the engine block is not used as earth. The Thermostart then sits in an insulating sleeve in the inlet manifold, and the common single-spade oil-pressure switch 2848062, which earths through the block, does not work: these engines need the two-terminal type.94,60
- Oil weeping from the rocker cover is a known 6.354 problem: according to a dealer, the original cork gasket hardens from the heat of the exhaust manifold beneath it and then leaks. Nitrile rubber gaskets last longer.95,96
- Many Perkins heat exchangers left the factory without zinc anodes. Fitting them on the sea-water and coolant sides and changing them before half the zinc is gone keeps broken-off pieces from blocking the tube stack.83
