PSS Shaft Seal
The PSS (Packless Sealing System) is a dripless face seal that replaces the stuffing box on a propeller shaft: a carbon stator on a rubber bellows clamped to the stern tube runs against a stainless rotor held on the shaft by set screws, and the compressed bellows keeps the two faces together. Type A is the standard version for 3/4″–3-3/4″ (20–95 mm) shafts on sail and power boats, as High-Speed with hose barb (02-…) or Low-Speed without barb for boats that never exceed 10 knots (01-…); the PRO (03-…) adds a reinforced silicone bellows, 316 stainless clamps and a shaft retention collar. Metric shafts are M sizes within Type A and PRO, while Type B is the heavy seal for commercial shafts from 4″ to 6-1/2″. First made by PYI Inc., the seal is now made and sold by PSS Seal LLC under the same part numbers: 02-100-112 is a Type A for a 1″ shaft in a 1-1/2″–1-5/8″ stern tube, and its maintenance kit is 07-100-112R.

Service intervals
| Task | Interval |
|---|---|
| Shaft seal (stuffing box) | At least every 6 months: check the bellows for cracks, splits, tears and brittleness; replace at the first sign of deterioration28 |
| Full service | Maintenance kit (bellows, O-rings, set screws, clamps): Type A at least every 6 years whatever its condition (07-…R); PRO every 8–10 years (07-…PR)2,13,17,28 |
| Hoses & clamps | Bellows clamps: replace at any sign of corrosion and with every bellows change28 |
| Gaskets | Whenever the rotor is loosened or moved: new set screws (single-use cup points); whenever it is moved or removed: new rotor O-rings (O-ring kit)17,19 |
| First service | Run-in of about 1 hour: a fine mist and black carbon dust are normal during this time17,28 |
| Storage / winterising | Laid up afloat for about 3 months or more: briefly pull the carbon back so a little water gets between the faces28 |
| Season check | After launching, and whenever air may be trapped in a seal without vent line or water feed: burp it by pulling the carbon back off the rotor until a short spray of water comes out26 |
From the PSS Type A & PRO installation instructions (2025 edition), the maker’s FAQ and its maintenance-kit pages. Type B (shafts from 4″) has its own instructions: new bellows at least every 8 years.

Good to know
- Order by two measurements: the shaft diameter and the outside diameter of the stern tube. Both are coded in the part number, and the stern tube code is in inches even on metric shafts.3
- The rotor set screws are single-use cup points, two per hole: one grips the shaft, the second locks it. Keep a set screw kit aboard; without spares, swap the two screws in each hole so an unused cup bites the shaft.13
- Slide the rotor on with soapy water only: no oil, grease or silicone spray on the O-rings or bellows. Keep fuel, oil and similar products out of the bilge around the seal.28
- Before tightening, mark the neutral point where the rotor just touches the carbon, then push it on by the specified compression. If the seal still sprays a mist underway after the run-in, it usually needs another 1/8″–1/4″ of compression.17
- A high-pitched squeal means the faces are running dry: check the vent or water-feed line, and let the faces cool down before you touch them.28
- Before uncoupling the shaft or removing the gearbox afloat, clamp the shaft so the bellows stays compressed; otherwise the faces separate and water comes in.28
