Quick Prince DP2 / DP3

The Prince DP is Quick’s vertical windlass range for boats of about 5 to 15 m: a low deck unit with the gypsy (and an optional drum) on top, the motor-gearbox below deck, a cone clutch that the lever releases, and a contactor box in the package. The DP2 (300–1000 W, 6–8 mm or 1/4–5/16 in chain) and the DP3 (700–1500 W, 8–10 mm or 5/16–3/8 in chain) are the core sizes; the DP1 is the small 300/500 W sibling for 6 mm or 1/4 in chain only. A P in the code (DP1 P, DP2 P, DP3 P) stands for the technopolymer gearbox housing, while the DP2E (500/800 W, epicyclic aluminium gearbox) and the 350 W DP2L 770 are separate DP2 versions with their own manuals; all of them are still in Quick’s 2026 catalogue. Quick, based in Ravenna, Italy, sells spares as numbered ‘OSP’ kits (gypsy, clutch cones, shaft kit with seals and bearing, motor, gearbox) and lists them with exploded views in each manual.

From section 7 (Maintenance) of Quick’s DP series manual rev. 001C; the DP2E and DP2L 770 manuals also call for stripping the gypsy once a year. Quick gives no operating hours, only ‘periodically’ and ‘once a year’. Switch the power to the motor off before working on the windlass.

Good to know

  • Once a year strip the top: undo the gypsy cover or drum bush with the lever, lift off the top cone, undo the stripper screws, then take out the gypsy and the bottom cone. Clean everything and put marine grease on the shaft thread and the cone seats before reassembly.1
  • Switch the windlass breaker off before you put the lever in: someone at the remote or a foot switch could otherwise start the motor with the lever still in the drum or gypsy cover.1
  • Do not lie at anchor on the windlass: once anchored, put the chain on a stopper or bollard, secure it again before sailing off, and isolate the windlass with its breaker under way.1
  • If it stalls under load, wait a few seconds and try again in short bursts instead of holding the button. If the breaker tripped, reset it and give the motor a few minutes; if the anchor still will not come up, motor the boat over it.1
  • Several Prince spares are shared: the DP3 cone kit FVSSCFANHC00A00 is the one for the Aleph AL3, Hector HC3 and Antares too, and the DP1 gypsies also fit the Eagle E1 and Rider R1 P. Order by the code, not the model name.1,5,4
  • Order a gypsy by chain standard, not just by size: 6 mm DIN 766 and 1/4 in BBB (DP1), or 8 mm and 5/16 in G4 (DP2), need different gypsies. Rope-and-chain gypsies only work properly with Quick’s own rope-to-chain splice.1
