Raymarine EV-100
The Evolution EV-100 is the smallest of Raymarine’s Evolution autopilots, made for small and mid-size boats. Every version is built on the same two units — the EV-1 sensor core, a 9-axis heading and motion sensor, and the ACU-100 actuator control unit — linked with the control head over SeaTalkng / NMEA 2000, so this page covers all three packs and their parts: EV-100 Wheel (Mk II wheel drive, wheel-steered sailing boats up to 7,500 kg), EV-100 Tiller (cockpit tiller drive, tiller boats up to 6,000 kg) and EV-100 Power (Type 0.5 hydraulic pump, 50–110 cc hydraulic steering), with the p70s push-button head in the sail packs and the p70Rs rotary head in the power pack. Raymarine rates the wheel and tiller drives for coastal sailing; the larger EV-150 to EV-400 systems use the same EV-1 with bigger control units and drives. The EV-100 runs on 12 V only and calibrates its compass by itself under way, so there is no separate fluxgate compass to fit and no manual compass swing.

Service intervals
| Task | Interval |
|---|---|
| Full service | None scheduled: EV-1, ACU-100 and control head have no user-serviceable parts; repairs only through Raymarine dealers. Clean with the power off and a damp cloth only, no solvents, acids, ammonia or pressure washer2 |
| Electrical connections | Regularly (Raymarine gives no hours or months): inspect all cables for chafe and damage and check that every connector is secure14 |
| Calibration | Before commissioning and after swapping any unit: update EV-1, ACU and head to the latest Raymarine software. The compass calibrates itself after the first switch-on, a factory reset or a compass restart: turn the boat through at least 270° at 3–15 kn, then check the deviation in the diagnostics menu — 45° or more means the EV-1 must be moved5,16 |
From Raymarine’s installation instructions (87180, 87472), the p70s/p70Rs operation instructions (81402) and the commissioning sheet 82285. Raymarine sets no maintenance schedule in hours or months for the EV-100.

Good to know
- Size by laden weight: add 20 % to the bare displacement for fuel, water, gear and crew, and stay within 7,500 kg for the Wheel and 6,000 kg for the Tiller pack. Raymarine rates these drives for coastal sailing; for offshore passages it advises a bigger drive with capacity to spare and a backup way to steer.2,17,18
- The ACU-100 needs its own fused 12 V feed (10 A fuse or breaker) plus a drain wire to the RF ground, and the SeaTalkng backbone its own power cable with a 5 A inline fuse. When the pilot goes dead, check the ACU’s internal 10 A blade fuse first — spares sit under its removable cover.2
- Keep the battery-to-ACU and ACU-to-drive runs short and heavy (combined length, 12 V). Wheel drive and Type 0.5 pump: 2.5 mm² up to 3 m, 4 mm² up to 5 m, 6 mm² up to 7 m, 10 mm² up to 10 m, 16 mm² up to 16 m. Tiller drive: 1.0 mm² up to 2.5 m, 1.5 mm² up to 4 m, 2.5 mm² up to 6 m. Thin wire shows up as weak steering and stall alarms.2
- Commission in this order: vessel hull type, the dockside wizard (drive type, rudder limit, rudder drive check), the hard-over time (only without a rudder reference sensor), then the compass calibration under way — a turn of at least 270° at 3–15 kn, no input needed. Check the deviation afterwards: 45° or more means the EV-1 has to move.16
- If the pilot hunts, raise the rudder damping one step at a time in the drive settings of the autopilot calibration; newer ACUs (part number ending in A, software v3.11 or later) use a wider scale, so values from an older unit may not match. ‘DRIVE STOPPED’ or ‘STALL DETECTED’ usually means too much helm load for the 7 A drive or a wrong hard-over time; ‘MOTOR POWER SWAPPED’ means motor and supply wires are on the wrong ACU terminals.2
- Buying used: the EV-1 and ACU-100 are identical in every EV-100 pack, so a Wheel pack becomes a tiller pilot by changing only the drive, and an older p70 or p70R head works once updated to software v2.11 or later. Check that the EV-1’s two sealing rings (R70161) and wall bracket (R70162) come with it — they are sold separately.2
