Raymarine EV-200 / EV-300 / EV-400

The EV-200, EV-300 and EV-400 are the larger Raymarine Evolution autopilots, sold as packs since 2013 for boats that need more steering power than the EV-100 gives. Each pairs the EV-1 heading sensor and a p70s or p70Rs head with a bigger 12/24 V actuator control unit below deck: the ACU-200 (15 A) runs the Type 1 linear and rotary drives and the Type 1 hydraulic pumps, the ACU-300 runs solenoid-valve steering and constant-running pumps, and the ACU-400 (30 A) runs the Type 2 and Type 3 drives, pumps and hydraulic linear drives for yachts up to 35,000 kg. The EV-1 sensor, the p70s/p70Rs heads and the SeaTalkng cabling are the same as on the EV-100 — see the EV-100 page for their part numbers; this page lists what differs: control units, drives, pumps and the rudder reference. Unlike the ACU-100, these units can power the SeaTalkng backbone and switch a drive clutch or bypass valve, and the EV-400 packs come with the M81105 rudder reference.

Service intervals

TaskInterval
Full serviceACU-200/300/400 and EV-1: nothing scheduled and no user-serviceable parts; clean with the power off and a damp cloth only, as on the EV-1001
Electrical connectionsRegularly (Raymarine gives no hours or months): check power, drive and network cables for wear or damage and every connection for tightness, at the ACU and at the drive1,7,11,17
LubricationMechanical linear drives, before every passage: mountings and alignment secure, cables sound, drive dry, no clicking, grinding or odd vibration (if there is, have it serviced before further use); keep the swivel joint and rod end lightly greased with waterproof grease7
Full serviceMechanical linear drives: service by a Raymarine-authorised agent every 2 years or 1000 hours, whichever comes first (manual 81175-8; the 2007 edition said every 2 years for heavily used drives)7,27
LubricationRotary drives, regularly: check mountings, chain and sprocket alignment and tension, and cables; grease chain and sprockets lightly. Heavily used drives: service every 2 years by an authorised agent11
Hoses & clampsHydraulic pumps, regularly: check connections, mountings, pipes and cables, and look for leaks; check again for air and leaks 24 h after installing and bleeding. Hydraulic fluid at the motor coupling means the pump shaft seal must be replaced (dealer job); no user-serviceable parts17
Oil level checkHydraulic linear drives, yearly: fluid level between MIN and MAX on the reservoir (mineral oil ISO VG10–VG40); external oil loss means the system needs bleeding. Regularly: mounting foot, tiller pin, ram alignment, pipes and cables, and grease the rod end with a marine grease that suits nitrile seals14
Software updateBefore commissioning and whenever a new release appears: update the EV-1 first, then the ACU, and bring the p70s/p70Rs head up to date too, through a Raymarine chartplotter on the backbone (older a/c/e/eS/gS displays need v13.37 or later, G-Series v4.49 or later); recalibrate the autopilot afterwards6,28

From Raymarine’s installation instructions 87180, the drive manuals 81175 (mechanical linear), 81174 (rotary), 81178 (hydraulic pumps) and 81177 (hydraulic linear) and the Evolution software pages. Raymarine gives hours and years only for the mechanical linear drives; everything else is “regularly”.

Good to know

  • Choose the drive first and the control unit follows: Type 1 linear and rotary drives and Type 1 pumps run on the ACU-200; Type 2 and Type 3 drives and every hydraulic linear drive need the ACU-400; solenoid steering and constant-running pumps need the ACU-300. Add 20 % to the bare displacement and keep some reserve for offshore sailing. For the Type 1 drives Raymarine’s website says 11,000 kg but the drive manuals say 10,000 kg — plan with the lower figure.1,8,7
  • Pick a hydraulic pump by the volume of the steering cylinder (stamped on it in cc or cu in), not by boat size, and take the pump whose range covers it: Raymarine says a size up or down brings nothing and can make the boat steer worse. On a single helm without check valves the pump would just turn the wheel, so fit the double pilot check valve M81166.33,17
  • Seal the pump’s 1/4 in BSPP ports with the bonded washers only — no PTFE tape, sealing paste or tapered fittings. The reservoir line has to rise all the way to the helm pump and must never be plugged. Bleed by running the pump against the wheel in both directions while topping up, then check again for air and leaks after 24 hours. Mineral hydraulic oil only, never brake fluid.17
  • Mount a linear drive at right angles to the tiller arm with the rudder amidships and the push rod at mid-stroke (700 mm on Type 1 and Type 2 short, 850 mm on Type 2 long), with no more than 5° between push rod and tiller arm. The boat’s own steering stops must limit the rudder to ±35° before the push rod reaches its end stop: running into the drive’s stops damages it and voids the warranty. Bolt the foot to a solid structural member, not to cabin joinery.7
  • Set the clutch-voltage switch on the ACU to 12 V for every Raymarine drive: even the 24 V drives have a 12 V clutch. The ACU can power the SeaTalkng backbone (3 A), but a backbone may have only one power feed, so switch the ACU’s SeaTalkng output off if the network already has its own power cable.1
  • Buying a used EV-400 or ACU-400 (E70100): check the serial number against Raymarine’s 2022 recall — 0620001 to 0720151 plus 0420339 and 0920329. From ACU software v3.14 an affected unit shows ‘Power & Motor cables are swapped’ and refuses to work; v3.15 freed a few unaffected units that had been shut down by mistake. Update the EV-1 first, then the ACU, then recalibrate; an ACU-300 must be on v3.13 or later and needs the M81105 rudder reference.5,6,1
