Raymarine ST2000+

The ST2000+ is Raymarine’s self-contained cockpit autopilot for tiller-steered sailing boats: electric linear drive, fluxgate compass and a six-button control panel in one 12 V unit that clips between a mounting socket on the cockpit seat and a pin on the tiller. It is rated for boats up to 4,500 kg fully laden, has a recirculating-ball drive with 77 kg of thrust and talks SeaTalk and NMEA 0183, so it can steer to a wind instrument or a GPS route; Raymarine calls it a coastal-cruising pilot, not an offshore one. The ST1000+ (A12004) is the same housing, keypad, software and main board with a lighter lead-screw drive for boats up to 3,000 kg, so the socket, tiller pin, plug, extensions and brackets below fit both. Both are still in production (the ST2000+ is A12005); their predecessors are the Autohelm 1000 and 2000 — Raymarine’s tiller pilots go back to Autohelm in 1973 — but none of the spares below is confirmed for those.

Fuse—5—No Raymarine part: a 12 A fuse or equivalent breaker on the pilot’s own supply circuit, plus a 5 A fuse in the SeaTalk 12 V (red) wire close to the pilot. A blank display usually means this fuse has gone.

Good to know

  • A blank display means no power: check the 12 A fuse or breaker first, then the plug and bulkhead socket for corrosion and a loose floating nut.5
  • Motor whirrs or clicks but the pushrod hardly moves, or the pilot groans under load: the toothed belts and pulleys inside are worn. The Q054 belt-and-roller kit is the usual fix; fit the whole set, not just the broken belt.1
  • Boat wanders slowly onto course: rudder gain too low. Boat overshoots and hunts: gain too high. Heading disagrees with the ship’s compass: run the deviation and alignment calibration. Unstable on northerly headings in the northern hemisphere: set the northerly/southerly heading correction.5
  • Undersized power cable costs thrust: use at least 1.5 mm² (16 AWG) for runs up to 2.5 m and 2.5 mm² (14 AWG) up to 4 m, on the pilot’s own circuit from the distribution panel.5
  • Bond the tiller pin and mounting socket with two-part epoxy: drill the holes to size, reinforce thin laminate and let the epoxy cure fully before loading them — the pilot can put high loads through the pushrod. Keep the steering compass at least 750 mm from the pilot, which has its own fluxgate compass inside.5
  • Size the pilot against the laden displacement, not the brochure figure: Raymarine says to add about 20 %, and calls the ST1000+/ST2000+ coastal-cruising pilots, not offshore passage-makers.28
