Simrad TP22 / TP32
The TP22 and TP32 are Simrad’s self-contained tiller pilots for sailing boats: drive, fluxgate compass and a five-key panel in one 12 V unit that sits between a cup in the cockpit seat and a pin on the tiller. Both connect to SimNet and NMEA 0183, so they can steer to a GPS route or the apparent wind; the TP22 has a screw-thread drive with 70 kg peak thrust for boats up to about 11 m and 5 t, the TP32 a faster recirculating-ballscrew drive with 85 kg for boats up to about 12 m and 6.3 t. The TP10 is the same unit without SimNet or NMEA, with 65 kg for boats up to about 10 m and 3.7 t; it shares the 2014 user guide, the pin, cup, pushrod extensions and brackets with the other two. TP22 and TP32 already existed in 2004 (Simrad’s HR22 remote sheet names them), but the spares below are confirmed only for the current units; the older Simrad and Navico tiller pilots (TP100, TP300, TP1600 to TP5500) are different designs.

| Part | OEM number | Also fits | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spares kit | TPPK71,2 | — | Tiller pin, mounting cup and pushrod end cap in one pack, for TP10, TP22 and TP32: the stainless pin is epoxied into the tiller, the cup into the cockpit seat. Simrad’s web shop no longer lists it; order it through a Simrad dealer. |
| Power socket & plug | SKT22/321,2 | — | TP22 and TP32: waterproof bulkhead socket with tails for 12 V (red +, black 0 V), NMEA 0183 input (red data, blue common) and the SimNet plug. Mount it on a vertical surface and keep the cap on whenever the pilot is unplugged. |
| Power socket & plug | SKT1001,2 | Index Marine B-DP2BH3 | TP10 only: it leaves the factory with bare wire ends (brown +12 V, blue 0 V), and Simrad sells this waterproof plug and socket set as the optional connection. One dealer lists the Index Marine 2-pin deck plug and socket as a TP10 accessory. |
| Push rod extension | PRE30 · PRE60 · PRE90 · PRE120 · PRE150 · PRE3001,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 | — | Screw into the pushrod end when the mounting cup sits further from the tiller pin than the standard 595 mm (pushrod at mid-stroke); all three models. PRE30 30 mm, PRE60 60 mm, PRE90 90 mm, PRE120 120 mm, PRE150 150 mm, PRE300 300 mm. |
| Tiller bracket | TB30 · TB60 · TB90 · TB1201,11,12,13,14,10 | — | Raises (or lowers) the tiller-pin point so the pilot sits level when the tiller and the cockpit seat are at different heights; all three models. TB30 30 mm, TB60 60 mm, TB90 90 mm, TB120 120 mm. |
| Mounting bracket | PB30 · PB60 · PB901,15,16,17,10 | — | Pedestal brackets: raise the mounting cup off the cockpit seat when the tiller sits higher than the seat; all three models. PB30 30 mm, PB60 60 mm, PB90 90 mm. |
| Mounting bracket | CB11,18,10 | — | Cantilever bracket: bolts to a vertical cockpit side and holds the mounting cup 135–240 mm out from it, for cockpits without a seat in the right place; all three models. |
| Remote control | 5806519,20 | — | HR22 hand remote, discontinued, so second-hand only: wired SimNet remote for the TP22 and TP32 (and the WP32 wheel pilot), not the TP10, with STBY/AUTO, TACK and port/starboard keys. It came with a bulkhead socket, a three-way SimNet joiner and a weather cap, and cannot select Nav mode. |
| Data converter / gateway | 000-0127-4521,22 | — | SimNet to NMEA 2000 adaptor kit (SimNet to Micro-C cable 0.5 m, SimNet joiner, NMEA 2000 T-connector) to put a TP22 or TP32 on an NMEA 2000 backbone; the pilot still needs its own 12 V supply. Simrad sells it for any SimNet device with a fixed SimNet cable; one dealer names the TP22 (one source). |

Service intervals
| Task | Interval |
|---|---|
| Calibration | After fitting, and again when course keeping gets worse or something magnetic (speakers, tools, deck hardware) has been added within 1 m of the pilot: auto compass calibration in calm water1 |
| Electrical connections | Every time the pilot is unplugged, fit the cap on the bulkhead socket (mounted vertically so no water stands in it); keep wire ends tinned and connections tight, because poor contact costs thrust and slows the response1 |
| Full service | None scheduled: the user guide gives no seal, lubrication or storage routine and lists no spares beyond the TPPK7 fittings and the sockets; repairs go to a Simrad service agent (note the serial number first)1 |
| Software update | TP22/TP32 on a SimNet or NMEA 2000 network: load V1.1.04 (December 2017) from a networked Simrad display; Simrad asks owners of pilots more than six years old to contact its support first23 |
From Simrad’s TP10/TP22/TP32 user guide (988-10413-003); the software line from Simrad’s archived TP22/TP32 download page. The pilot has no maintenance schedule beyond these checks.

Good to know
- Calibrate the built-in compass after fitting: motor at 2–3 kn in calm water with the pilot in Standby, start a slow turn to starboard with the starboard key, then hold TACK and press port and starboard together. Let the boat turn at least 1¼ circles (450°) in about two minutes; a flashing port light means turn slower, a flashing starboard light faster, and a short beep means done. If it keeps failing, look for speakers or metal within 1 m, or fit an external SimNet compass (TP22/TP32 only).1
- Choosing between them: the TP10 only holds a compass course (no GPS or wind input) and suits boats up to about 10 m and 3.7 t; the TP22 adds SimNet/NMEA to steer to a waypoint or the wind, up to about 11 m and 5 t; the TP32 has the 85 kg ballscrew drive and a much faster helm (4.0 s instead of 6.9 s end to end unloaded), up to about 12 m and 6.3 t. Simrad pitches all three at typical coastal sailing, so with a heavily laden boat or in following seas, size up.25,24,26,1
- Centre the tiller before the first AUTO after switching on: the pilot takes rudder centre from that first engage and forgets it when the power goes off. If it throws on a big helm angle the moment it is engaged and the course error grows, it is set for the wrong side of the cockpit: hold NAV (CAL on the TP10) and TACK while switching on, then choose port or starboard.1
- Boat creeps back to course too slowly: raise Response (1–9). Boat snakes and overshoots: lower it. Seastate On adds a deadband so the pilot ignores small yaws in waves and saves power. Below about 4 kn, and always when running, the pilot switches to its stronger Hi settings by itself. Close-hauled, ease the main or reef early: less weather helm means less current, wear and drag.1
- Give the pilot its own 10 A breaker, use 1.5 mm² (16 AWG) cable for runs under 4 m and 2.5 mm² (14 AWG) up to 8 m, and feed it from the same battery bank as any SimNet or NMEA device it talks to. A pilot that suddenly drops to Standby usually means a voltage dip: cable too thin, a poor connection or a flat battery.1
- Fitting: drill a vertical 6.3 mm hole on the tiller centreline and epoxy the pin in so 18 mm stands proud; drill 12.7 mm for the mounting cup, epoxy it so only the flange shows, and back a thin seat with hardwood or marine ply. Load neither until the epoxy has fully cured. Aim for 595 mm from cup to pin with the pushrod at mid-stroke, the pin 460 mm from the rudder stock, and the pilot level and square to the centred tiller; extensions and brackets make up the rest. Keep the steering compass at least 1 m away; on a steel or ferro-cement boat fit an external SimNet compass on the mast, 1–2 m above deck (TP22/TP32).1
