Sleipner Side-Power SE30–SE120

The SE series covers Sleipner’s DC tunnel thrusters with on/off control, known under the Side-Power name, for bow and stern tunnels: single-propeller SE30 and SE40 (125 mm tunnel), SE50 (140 mm, bow only) and SE60 (185 mm), twin-propeller SE80 and SE100 (185 mm) and SE120 (215 mm), from 40 to 139 kg of thrust, at 12 V or 24 V (SE30 and SE40 only 12 V, SE120 only 24 V). The SEP or ‘PRO’ versions share motor bracket, gear leg and propellers but add a PPC speed controller and S-Link panels; the IP versions have a sealed, ignition-protected motor housing. The SE range followed the SP series (SP30/35/40, SP55, SP75, SP95), which Sleipner’s parts list dates from 1998 to 2007, and much carries over: Sleipner lists the same complete motor for SP30 and SE30, SP40 and SE40, SP55 and SE60, SP75 and SE80, SP95 and SE100, and the SE60 uses the SP55 gear leg. Before ordering brushes, brush springs or a thermo switch, note the model code (for example SE80/185T-12V) and the serial number from the motor label; Sleipner asks for both.

Service intervals

TaskInterval
Season checkBefore every season, afloat: the thruster compartment clean and dry with no sign of leaks, all electrical connections clean and tight, batteries in good condition. Ashore: propeller(s) and tunnel free of damage, propellers tight on the gear leg, all thruster parts fastened, tunnel and gear leg cleaned of growth39,74
AnodeBefore every season, or when about half of it has gone; secure the screw with sealant or thread glue so it cannot drop off. In some waters an extra anode may be needed to last until the next haul-out39,100
AntifoulingBefore every season on propeller(s) and gear leg; never on the anode, the seals or the propeller shaft, and keep paint out of the gap between propeller and gear leg39,82
Oil level checkSE: each season, check that the gear leg is not leaking oil. SP with oil tank: there must always be oil in the tank, top up with EP90 gear oil, and check the oil in the gear leg every time the boat is out of the water39,100,101
Gear oil changeSP with oil tank only: change the gear oil at least every second year. Sleipner gives no oil change for the sealed SE gear legs100,101,6
First serviceSP manuals: at the first haul-out, retighten the bolts holding gear leg and motor bracket together to the specified torque100,101

From Sleipner’s current SE and SEP user manuals (5915 and 5916, revision 13, 2025) and, for the old SP thrusters with oil tank, the Side-Power manuals of 2002. Sleipner words everything as ‘before every season’ and gives no operating hours, nor any interval for the motor brushes.

SP with oil tank (SP30/35/40 S and Si, SP55 up to Si, SP75 and SP95): EP90 gear oil, 35 ml (SP30/40), 50 ml (SP55) or 70 ml (SP75/95), fed from a small tank mounted above the waterline. The SP S2i versions have no tank6,39,100,101,7
Engine protectionIPC (Intelligent Power Control) on every on/off model: a short delay between directions, it stops trying when a weak battery makes the solenoid chatter and stops the thruster by itself if a solenoid welds in. Thermal switch in the motor. A shear pin (SE30/SE40/SE60 ‘S’, SP30 to SP55) or a flexible coupling (S2 versions, SE50, twin models) between motor and drive shaft protects the gears if the propeller jams6,39,30,92,101
ControlSE: analog on/off panels switched on by pressing both ON buttons together (8950 G, 8955 G, 8960, 8965 for one thruster, 8940 dual joystick for bow and stern), several panels per thruster possible; the panel switches off after about 6 minutes without use. SEP: S-Link bus with proportional panels. An automatic main switch can be switched on and off with the panel90,83,39,105,82
PredecessorSP series (Sleipner’s parts list of discontinued thrusters): SP30 (S 05/2003–11/2004, Si, S2i until 11/2007), SP35 S (until 01/2003), SP40 (S 01/2003–11/2004, Si, S2i until 11/2007), SP55 (‘4 hp’ 08/1998–09/1999, S, Si, S2i until 08/2007), SP75 (T 10/1999–11/2004, Ti until 08/2007), SP95 (T 03/2000–11/2004, Ti until 08/2007)7
Years builtSE series since 2008 (the first SE80/SE100/SE130 manual is dated 2008); SE and SEP are in Sleipner’s range in 2026106,6,71
Warranty2 years for leisure use, 1 year for commercial use, transferable; it starts at the latest 18 months after the boat’s first launch. Wear and service parts are excluded, and skipped maintenance voids it for the parts affected39
MountingMotor on the bracket in any direction; more than 30° off vertical it needs a separate support (not on the motor’s top cap). Motor bolts 33 Nm and gear-leg gasket bedded in MS polymer on both sides (SE80 to SE150). Motor cable nuts at most 13 Nm (M8) or 23 Nm (M10)82,103

Good to know

  • Read the motor label before you order. The model code gives size, tunnel and voltage (SE80/185T-12V: 80 kg class, 185 mm tunnel, two propellers, 12 V), and for brushes, brush springs and thermo switches Sleipner also wants the serial number; for several models it sells more than one brush kit.6,45
  • If the motor runs but the boat does not move, look at propellers and drive pins first, then inside: on SE30/SE40/SE60 ‘S’ and the SP30 to SP55 a broken shear pin, on the S2 and twin models the flexible coupling. The shear pin is changed afloat: main switch off, motor cables off, lift the motor off its bracket. New thrusters came with spare pins fixed to the motor.39,30,28
  • On/off SE thrusters are rated for lead batteries: a lithium bank holds a higher voltage under load, so the motor spins faster and hotter, may cavitate and wears early, and running outside the rating voids the warranty. The PRO versions limit the voltage in their PPC (firmware 1.033 or later). Don’t connect either to a bank whose BMS can cut out mid-manoeuvre.6,39,74
  • Never run the thruster out of the water, and stop at once if it runs without giving thrust: even a few seconds without load can damage the drive. Use it for about 3 minutes at most, keep the engine running to hold the battery voltage up, and only below 4 knots.39
  • Put the fuse and main switch in the positive cable close to the battery (Sleipner’s troubleshooting guide says within 72 in, about 1.8 m). Tighten the motor cable nuts to no more than 13 Nm (M8) or 23 Nm (M10) and never put washers between stacked cable lugs: that causes overheating and fire.28,82,103
  • Buying a boat with an old SP thruster: look for a small oil tank above the waterline near the motor. If there is one, the gear leg must be kept full of EP90 and the oil changed at least every second year; tank, hose and seals are still in Sleipner’s list of discontinued parts.100,101,7
