Suzuki DF15A
The DF9.9B, DF15A and DF20A are one engine: a 327 cc in-line twin four-stroke with a belt-driven overhead camshaft and electronic fuel injection that needs no battery, built since the 2013 model year. The three differ only in engine-control tuning and rated output (7.3, 11.0 and 14.7 kW) and share filters, water pump kit, anodes, gaskets, propellers and the maintenance kit, which is why this page covers all three. They come with tiller or remote control, pull or electric start, manual or power tilt and 15 or 20 in shafts, and are common on tenders, RIBs and small fishing boats, in the long-shaft version also as an auxiliary on small yachts. The older carburetted DF9.9 and DF15 (up to 2013) and the 208 cc DF9.9A/DF8A are different engines and not covered here.

Hours or months, whichever comes first, from Suzuki’s owner’s manual 99011-89LH0-000 (Japanese edition, 2025); an English edition was not available to compare. Suzuki asks for shorter intervals under hard use: long spells at full throttle or idle, shallow muddy water, or stopping a hot engine without letting it idle first.

Good to know
- Check the model year before buying plugs: 2013–2017 engines take NGK CPR6EA-9, engines from 2018 take NGK MR6K-9. The maintenance kit 17400-89812 comes with MR6K-9, so an older engine needs its plugs bought separately.1
- Tell the three apart by the start of the engine number: 0995F is a DF9.9B, 01504F a DF15A, 02002F a DF20A. They share every wear part, so a DF9.9B owner can safely buy kits, filters and anodes sold for the DF20A.7,1
- The engine counts its running hours and shows an oil-change reminder. Reset it after every oil change as the manual’s monitor chapter describes, or the warning keeps coming back.7
- Look at the old gear oil as it drains: milky oil means water is getting past the propeller shaft or drive shaft seals, so have them replaced before the gears corrode. Refill from the lower screw until oil appears at the upper one, about 250 ml.7
- The timing belt is due every 4 years or 800 h and is a dealer job. On a used motor older than four years, ask for proof that it has been changed.7
- Pull-start models do not charge a battery as standard. Suzuki sells a charging kit (32000-89L03) and an electric-start kit that charges as well; the electric-start conversion also needs a different ECM for each model.2
