Suzuki DF4A / DF5A / DF6A
The DF4A, DF5A and DF6A are one engine in three ratings (2.9, 3.7 and 4.4 kW): a 138 cc single-cylinder OHV four-stroke with carburettor, recoil start and tiller, built by Thai Suzuki since 2016 and weighing 24 kg with the short shaft. Its 1.0 litre tank sits above the carburettor and feeds it by gravity, the pressure lubrication runs through a small cartridge oil filter, and the motor can lie on its port side, starboard side or front without leaking. Because the three share every wear part, the filters, water pump kit, anodes and propellers on this page fit all of them; they are common on tenders and as auxiliaries on small sailing boats. The predecessor DF4, DF5 and DF6 (2002–2015) also has 138 cc but is a different engine without an oil filter; where its parts differ, the notes say so.

Wear parts & part numbers
| Part | OEM number | Also fits | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Service kit | 17400-918911,2,3,4 | — | Suzuki’s kit for the 100 h or annual service of all three models from model year 2017: water pump repair kit, pump case upper panel 17412-91JL0 and sleeve 17413-91JL0, oil filter, fuel filter, CPR6EA-9 plug, both anodes, oil drain washer, two gear plug gaskets, an O-ring and a cotter pin. Suzuki’s global 2026 kit list gives 16500-97L00 for the same models, without panel and sleeve. The older DF4/DF6 took 17400-91860 (2002–2010) and 17400-91830 (2011–2016). |
| Water pump repair kit | 17400-986L21,3,2replaces 17400-98661 | — | Repair kit for the water pump in the gear case; Suzuki’s catalogues do not list the impeller on its own. Suzuki USA gives the same number for the older DF4/DF6 from 2002, so both generations take it. Suzuki New Zealand’s 2025 catalogue still prints the earlier 17400-98661. |
| Spark plug | 09482-00L041,3,5 | NGK CPR6EA-95,3 | Gap 0.8–0.9 mm; one is in the maintenance kit. Also right for the older DF4/DF6 from 2011; engines from 2003–2010 take NGK BPR6ES (Suzuki 09482-00299). |
| Engine oil filter | 16510-16H111,3,2,6 | — | Small cartridge filter, new with the A models; the older DF4/DF5/DF6 has none. The manual has it changed (dealer job) after the first 20 h, then every 200 h or yearly. |
| Fuel filter (engine) | 44330-13H001,3,2 | — | Filter under the engine cover; also in the maintenance kit. The older DF4/DF6 (2002–2016) uses 15410-98500. |
| Drain plug gasket | 09168-120171,3 | — | Washer 12 × 17 × 1 mm for the engine oil drain plug 09248-12009; fit a new one at every oil change. The older DF4/DF6 has drain plug 09248-10008 with washer 09168-10022. |
| Gear oil plug gaskets | 59178-97J001,2,3 | — | Two per gear oil change, for the drain and the level screw; both are in the maintenance kit. |
| Anode (engine) | 55321-87J013,2,1 | — | Aluminium anode that Suzuki lists from the DF2.5 to the DF350A; for fresh water only there is a magnesium version, 55321-87J11. One is in the maintenance kit. |
| Anode (engine) | 55321-95J002,3,1,7 | — | Second aluminium anode, which Suzuki lists only for the DF2.5 and the DF4A–DF6A; the maintenance kit holds one of each. |
| Thermostat | 17670-91J028 | — | 50 °C thermostat. One source: a dealer lists it for the DF2.5 to DF20A, naming the DF4A, DF6A and the older DF4, DF5 and DF6; Suzuki’s maintenance catalogues do not show it. |
| Gear oil | 99000-22B48-0009,5,1 | — | Suzuki ECSTAR outboard gear oil SAE 90 in a 400 ml tube with nozzle, enough for a change of about 190 ml. Suzuki USA sells its gear oil as 990A0-01E81-01Q (1 US quart). Any hypoid gear oil SAE 90, API GL-5 meets the manual. |
| Propeller | 58110-91JL0-01910,2,1 | — | 3-blade aluminium, 7-1/2 × 6 in, the lowest pitch, for heavy loads; Suzuki New Zealand lists it for the DF4A. Which pitch comes fitted from the factory differs by market. Also fits the older DF4/DF6 from 2004. |
| Propeller | 58110-91JM0-01910,2,1,11 | — | 3-blade aluminium, 7-1/2 × 6-1/2 in; Suzuki New Zealand lists it for the DF5A, Suzuki USA’s 2019 sheet for the DF4A. Also fits the older DF4/DF6 from 2004. |
| Propeller | 58110-91JN0-01910,2,1,11 | — | 3-blade aluminium, 7-1/2 × 7 in, the highest pitch; Suzuki New Zealand and Suzuki USA’s 2019 sheet list it for the DF6A. Also fits the older DF4/DF6 from 2004. |
| Propeller nut | 58130-91JL010,2,1 | — | The same nut on the DF4A/5A/6A and on the older DF4/DF6. |
| Propeller hardware kit | 57635-97L00 · 58120-91JL0 · 09204-0300310,2,1 | — | Single parts, not a kit: stopper (thrust piece) 57635-97L00, press-in propeller bushing 58120-91JL0 and the cotter pin 09204-03003 for the nut. Fit a new cotter pin every time the propeller comes off; one is in the maintenance kit. The older DF4/DF6 has the same bushing from 2004 but stopper 57635-91JL0. |
| Battery charging kit | 32000-97L101,2 | — | Optional 12 V 5 A battery charging for the A models; it consists of the rectifier/regulator set 32801-97L01 and the receptacle kit 39600-97L10. |

Hours or months, whichever comes first, from Suzuki’s Japanese owner’s manual for the DF5A and DF6A (99011-97L80-000, August 2023); the DF4A is the same engine with a lower rating. That manual sets 6 months for engine oil, gear oil and most checks, while Suzuki USA’s portable quick reference, Suzuki’s global oil guide and its maintenance-kit list say 100 h or 12 months. Jobs marked “dealer” are workshop jobs in the manual.

Good to know
- New motors leave the factory without engine oil: fill 0.7 l before the first start. To read the level, rest the dipstick in the filler neck without screwing it in.12,5
- The A models have a small cartridge oil filter (16510-16H11) that the older DF4/DF5/DF6 lacks. It is due after the first 20 hours and then every 200 hours or yearly, so order it with the oil and a new drain washer (09168-12017).1,5
- Lay the motor down only on its port side, starboard side or front: those are the three positions Suzuki designed it for, without fuel or oil leaking.13
- If the drained gear oil looks milky, water is getting into the gear case: have the seals checked before you use the motor again. Refill from the lower hole until oil runs out of the upper one, about 190 ml, and fit new gaskets (59178-97J00) on both screws.5,12
- After salt water, flush the motor: stand it in a tub with the water about 13 cm (5 in) above the anti-ventilation plate and let it idle in neutral for 5 minutes, or fit Suzuki’s flushing attachment 55181-95200 and run a garden hose through it for 5 minutes with the engine switched off.12,2,1
- Replace the anodes once they have worn to about two thirds of their original size, and never paint them. The propeller nut needs a new cotter pin (09204-03003) every time the propeller comes off.5,10
