Tecma electric toilets

Tecma toilets are vitreous-china marine toilets from Italy (Tecma S.r.l. in Otricoli, ceramics from the Civita Castellana district), sold today by Thetford Marine. The macerator pump sits in the base: steel blades in a chamber ahead of the impeller grind the waste and pump it to the holding tank, while a solenoid valve on the pressurised fresh-water system or a separate inlet pump for sea water fills the bowl. The Flexi line for 50–100 ft boats is built around the Silence Plus 2G (big bowl) and Elegance 2G (small bowl), each also as a Short for a 10 cm step and the Elegance as a Cut for an angled wall, and runs on the MAC 11 pump (T-PF.P01A 12 V, T-PF.P01B 24 V), like the Design line (X-Light, Evolution, Breex); the Compact line for 20–50 ft (Nano and Compass High/Short, also as Eco with a rocker switch, in North America also the EasyFit) uses the smaller MAC 4. The second generation replaced the first Flexi line (Silence Plus, Elegance, Elegance Cut, Prestige, Saninautico) in 2016–2017 with the same footprint and outer dimensions, but its internal hoses and floor brackets do not fit the older toilets. There is no seal kit to renew as on piston-pump heads: Tecma suggests carrying a spare pump of the right voltage, the rubber hose kit (T-PF.P50-2G on the 2G), a solenoid valve or inlet pump and a control panel.

From the Tecma manuals for the Design and Flexi line, the Compact line and the Compass Eco. Tecma gives no hour or calendar intervals: its manuals say the toilets need no special maintenance or winterisation and list only the periodic and pre-winter jobs above. There is no seal kit to renew as on piston-pump heads; the hoses, the duckbill valve and the pump are changed when they fail, so Tecma recommends carrying a spare pump of the right voltage, a rubber kit, a solenoid valve or inlet pump and a control panel.

Good to know

  • Know the generation before ordering hoses or brackets: the Flexi 2G (from 2016) has the air admittance valve built into its discharge hose and takes rubber kit T-PF.P50-2G and floor kit T-896, and neither fits a first-generation Silence Plus or Elegance, although footprint and outer dimensions are the same. Seats and lids (T-278… for the Silence Plus, T-236… for the Elegance) fit both generations.10,1
  • Old control panels are no longer made. Thetford’s replacements: Multiframe 1P → Multiframe SFT 2P (T-PF.P11M2); Argent 1P/2P and Touch 1P/2P → Multiframe SFT 2P or Touch SFT Multifunction; Premium → Touch SFT Multifunction; for the Premium Plus ask Thetford.7,10
  • Toilets sold in North America carry other part numbers: there the MAC 11 is T-PF.P136 (12 V) or T-PF.P137 (24 V) with hose, instead of T-PF.P01A/P01B. Their model code tells you toilet and voltage: T-S2G… is a Silence Plus 2G, T-COM… a Compass, T-NAN… a Nano, followed by 012 or 024 for 12 or 24 V.1,2,6,17,4
  • Weak or slow flushing is often low voltage: the supply should stay at 12 V ± 2 V (24 V ± 2 V) and drop no more than 10 % while the macerator runs. That needs the heavy cables from the wiring chart and a fuse or breaker for each toilet.13,1
  • If the bowl stops filling but the pump still runs, look at the tank LED: when the sensor reports a full holding tank, the SFT panel blocks the water. On the Touch SFT, pressing both buttons twice about 1 s apart overrides the block, holding both for 3 s and releasing when the lock LED flashes runs the macerator alone (holding on to 5 s switches between sailing and mooring mode), and holding the centre LED for 10 s resets the panel.1,12
  • With a raw-water inlet pump, remember that the pump is not a check valve: water can flow through it when it is stopped. If the toilet can ever sit below the heeled waterline, a vented loop high enough above it is mandatory in the flush line, and the seacocks should be closed whenever the boat is left.1,13
