Volvo Penta 5.7 GXi

The Volvo Penta 5.7 GXi is a 5.7-litre (350 cu in) V8 petrol engine for Aquamatic sterndrives, built from model year 2001 (5.7GXi-A) to model year 2012 (5.7GXi-320-R and 5.7GXiE-320-R); no Volvo Penta document for it after 2012 was found. The series letter on the engine plate decides many part numbers: the A series of 2001 has throttle-body injection, multi-port injection starts with the B series, and the line runs on through C, D, E, F, G, H, J, N and P to 320-R. An F after the letter (CF, GF, JF …) means factory closed cooling, GXiE marks the versions with EVC electronic controls (J, K, M, N, P, 320-R) and GXiC/GXiCE the catalyst engines. Volvo Penta gives 235 kW (315 hp) at the propeller shaft for the A series and 239 kW from the G series on; the drive is an SX or DP-S, from the H series on an SX-A or DPS-A, and this page lists only its anodes and bellows — the drive has manuals of its own. The lower-rated 5.7Gi is the sister engine.

Good to know

Read the full designation on the engine plate before you order: the sea-water pump changed with the G series, so A to F engines take impeller kit 21951348 and engines from G on take 21213664 — each kit fits only its own pump.¹¹
Set the oil level by the dipstick, not by the book capacity: Volvo Penta warns that overfilling these V8s makes the oil foam and leads to high temperatures and loss of power. Check it after a warm run, with the boat level and the engine stopped for at least five minutes.⁸¹
Fit only marine-rated replacements for the starter, alternator, distributor, plugs and leads, fuel pumps, filters and regulator. Automotive parts are not ignition-protected and can set off petrol vapour in the engine bay.⁸¹
Petrol with ethanol attracts water: use no more than E10, fit an extra water-separating filter rated for petrol inboards (at least 189 l/h) between tank and engine, carry a spare element and add stabiliser if the fuel will stand for more than two weeks.⁸¹
On closed-cooled (F) engines use green silicate-based ethylene-glycol coolant mixed 50/50 with distilled water — not Volvo Penta’s yellow VCS coolant and no OAT or HOAT coolant. None of the operator’s manuals checked gives a coolant capacity for these engines.⁸⁴
Keep the top of the exhaust risers at least 35.6 cm (14 in) above the static waterline. Extra weight aft — a generator, a tower, water tanks — can eat into that margin and let water run back into the engine.²⁷
