Volvo Penta D2-50, D2-60 & D2-75

The D2-50, D2-60 and D2-75 are Volvo Penta’s 2.2-litre four-cylinder sailboat diesels with a cam-driven in-line injection pump, glow plugs and freshwater cooling through a heat exchanger; the D2-50 is naturally aspirated, the D2-60 and D2-75 are turbocharged with a charge-air cooler. The D2-75 has been built since 2003 in versions A, B, C and F (there is no D or E); the D2-60 followed in December 2016 and the D2-50 in 2017, both only as version F and as successors to the D2-55 (these two dates come from trade-press reports of Volvo’s announcement). Most service parts are common to all three, and in Volvo’s parts catalogue the D2-50F shares most sections with the D2-55F; the earlier D2-55 has its own page. They drive through MS25/HS25 reverse gears or a 130S/150S saildrive and are found in boats such as the Bavaria Cruiser 46 and the Fountaine Pajot Elba 45.

Hours or time, whichever comes first. The schedule comes from the service protocols Volvo Penta generates per engine (D2-75F and D2-50F; the D2-60F and the earlier D2-75 versions get the same one) and from the operator’s manuals. Only the oil change has changed over the years: the 2003–2009 manuals for versions A–C gave 500 h, the current protocol gives 400 h for every version.

Good to know

Read the version letter on the engine plate before you order. Filters, impeller kit, raw-water pump, belt, thermostat, air filter, glow plugs and injectors are the same on every D2-50, D2-60 and D2-75, but the exhaust elbow (3584413 on the turbo engines, 21424345 on the D2-50), the head gasket and the feed pump differ.^2,67,74
Yearly service parts: oil filter 3840525, fuel filter 861477, impeller kit 21951346 and the element for the boat’s pre-filter (3581078 or 861014, depending on the housing). Volvo lists the boxed kit 21189426 only for the D2-50F and D2-75 A–C; for a D2-60F or D2-75F, order the parts singly.²³
Lubricate a new impeller only with glycerine, push it in while turning it clockwise, and never let the pump run dry. Keep a spare impeller on board.¹³²
Saildrive anodes are split collars that you can change without pulling the propeller. Choose the metal for the water: zinc for salt, aluminium for salt or brackish, magnesium for fresh water. The 130S/150S-C and -D drives take 22651246/23615636/22651247, the early 150S and 150S-B take 3888305/3888306.^113,139,119
Renew the rubber seal between saildrive and hull every 7 years, whatever the hours, and inspect it at every yearly service.¹²⁶
Older D2-75 B/C manuals list ATF for MS25 gears and saildrives; current Volvo documents call for SAE 15W-40 engine oil. Find out what is already in the drive before you top up, because Volvo warns against mixing oil qualities.^133,45,134
