Volvo Penta IPS 350–650
Volvo Penta IPS is a pod drive: each engine turns a steerable unit under the hull with two forward-facing, counter-rotating propellers, and the exhaust leaves through the drive into the prop wash. It was launched in January 2005. The first generation (IPS1, drive plates IPS-A to IPS-F) ran behind the D4 and D6 diesels as IPS 350 to IPS 600 up to the F engines of 2019; since then the IPS10 (IPS10-A and IPS10-B) has been paired with the D6 G as D6-IPS 400 to 650, and Volvo lists no D4 with it. The IPS number is not the engine power (an IPS 600 has a 435 hp D6), so read the drive plate before ordering: oil filter, strainer, rubber rings and shaft-seal kit changed with the IPS10, while the propeller sets, nuts, spinner and both anodes carried over. The larger IPS15, IPS2/IPS20 and IPS3/IPS30 drives behind the D8, D11 and D13 use other propellers and parts and are not covered here.

For the IPS10 the catalogue lists the T4 set as 23442954. A propeller dealer gives these as the old numbers and sells T2 to T8 as 23442952 to 23442958; it lists T9 under 3861113 and T10 as no longer available, so ask for the current number. |
| Propeller | 21368025 · 21368016 · 21258473 · 2136801235,36,45,46,47,48,38 | — | TS-series propeller sets for IPS1 and IPS10, in the order TS3, TS4, TS5, TS6 as in Volvo’s catalogue. The same dealer gives these as old numbers and lists the sets now as 23442963 to 23442966. |

| Nose cone | 2377944935,36,57,58,4replaces 22659020replaces 22077581 | — | Spinner kit for IPS1 and IPS10; a dealer lists its contents as spinner 22072153, both lock plates, both propeller nuts, nine screws, the propeller tool and grease. Tighten its centre screw fully home, or the spinner gets damaged the next time the propellers come off. |
| Rope cutter | 2306272936,35,59,60,61replaces 21686492 | — | Line cutter behind the propellers. Volvo names 23062729 for IPS1, IPS10 and the larger drives and lists it for the IPS10; the IPS1 catalogue still shows 21686492 (drives from serial number 3940018643), which a dealer gives as its old number. |
| Propeller shaft seal | 3842286 · 384228825,62,63,64,65,66,24 | — | Propeller shaft seals (sealing rings, brown 3842286 and blue 3842288) of the lower unit, IPS1 and IPS10, plus sealing ring kit 3842290. Service intervals
| Task | Interval |
|---|---|
| Oil level check | Daily before starting, at the dipstick, after the drive has stood for at least 12 hours; do not screw the dipstick in to read it. IPS10: read it on the display (Info > Vessel info > Oil level) after at least 6 hours’ standstill with GPS signal, otherwise use the dipstick4,24,14 |
| First service | IPS1 only: after the first 400 h or 12 months, replace the inner oil strainer of the drive and clean the metal strainer in the shift valves66,75,76 |
| Gear oil change | Drive oil and oil filter: IPS1 every 400 h or 12 months, IPS10 every 400 h or 24 months. Also when laying up66,75,77,78,4 |

| Propeller | Once a year take the propellers off, clean the shafts and grease them; check the blades for damage15,13 |
| Storage / winterising | Laying up ashore: clean the drive right after lifting, change drive oil and filter, take the propellers off and grease the shafts, check the anodes, touch up the drive’s antifouling4 |
Hours or time, whichever comes first. From Volvo Penta’s printed IPS 350–600 service protocol (2016), the protocols Volvo generates per engine or drive (D4-300D-F, D6-435D-F, IPS10-A, IPS10-B), the operator’s manuals and the service manuals of 2026. Only drive items are listed; engine oil, filters and impeller belong to the engine. Two differences: the first-generation operator’s manual checks the clamping-ring gap every 200 h and replaces anodes at about one third wear, and the generated IPS10-A protocol has no line for the propeller shaft seals, which the IPS10-B and all IPS1 protocols change every 1200 h.

Good to know
- Read the drive plate before ordering. IPS1 (IPS-A to IPS-F) and IPS10 share the propeller sets (except T4), nuts, spinner, transom anode and drive anode, but not the oil filter (834337 against kit 23935461), strainer, rubber rings or propeller-shaft seal kit, and the IPS number on the boat says nothing about which generation you have.4,35,36,5,1
- Use only Volvo’s IPS transmission oil: the clutch packs are tuned to it, and Volvo refuses warranty claims after the wrong oil. Check the level only after the drive has stood for 12 hours; thin, greyish oil means water, usually from the propeller shaft seals, and needs a workshop before the gears suffer.15,24,4
- Leave the drive anode in place even with ACP fitted. ACP gives off a little chlorine gas; Comfort mode switches it off for four hours and lets the zinc anode on the transom protect the drive. Never paint the anodes, the white plastic exhaust plate or the groove between drive and hull, and use no copper-based or TBT antifouling on the IPS.15,13,24
- Volvo supplies a propeller tool with the drive. Grease the shaft splines and threads, torque the locking-ring screws to 24–28 Nm and screw the spinner’s centre screw fully home, or it gets damaged next time. Choose the set by the full-throttle rpm: if the engine runs above its range, go up in pitch.4,14
- If steering fails on one drive, align it straight with the crank tool from the boat’s tool box: gear in neutral, wind to the end stop, then back 75 turns (IPS10 manual), and steer with the levers if all drives are out. After a grounding run slowly to harbour and have drives and propellers checked out of the water.14,24
- Buying a used IPS boat: ask for proof of the 400-hour drive services (oil, filter, strainers) and, past 1200 hours, of new propeller-shaft seals; check the drive oil for water and the clamping-ring gap for corrosion, and if ACP is fitted, that it shows Good Protection.66,75,24
