Yamaha F50 / F60 / F70

Yamaha’s 1-litre midrange four-stroke: an inline four of 996 cc with a belt-driven overhead camshaft, electronic fuel injection and a spin-on oil filter, built since 2005 as the successor of the older F50/F60 generation. The F50 and F60 are the same 8-valve engine in two power settings and share almost every service part; the F70 of 2010 adds a 16-valve head, LKR7E plugs and the larger 2.33:1 gearcase. The T50 and T60 High Thrust versions (FT50 and FT60 in Europe) use that larger gearcase with big Dual Thrust propellers for heavy boats, while the F models are common on aluminium fishing boats, pontoons and small GRP boats. Since 2005 mostly the names have changed (F50F, F50H, F50L, now simply F50), so most wear parts below fit every year; the older F50A/F60A generation and the jet-drive F60 are not covered here.

Hours or months, whichever comes first, from Yamaha Europe’s owner’s manual 6C1-28199-7R-E0 (December 2025); the 2013 edition, 6C1-28199-7B, gives the same intervals but does not yet list the throttle body. The chart assumes about 100 h of use a year and regular flushing; “dealer” marks the jobs Yamaha leaves to its dealers. Under severe use (long trolling, long runs at full throttle, no time to warm up, frequent starts, shifting or changing loads) Yamaha asks for every service twice as often.

Good to know

Order by gearcase, not just by horsepower: the F50 and F60 share the small 1.85:1 gearcase (propeller mark G, 0.43 l of gear oil, pump kit 63D-W0078-03-00), while the F70 and the T50/T60 High Thrust use the larger 2.33:1 gearcase (mark K, 0.67 l) with their own kits, 6CJ-W0078-01-00 for the F70 and 6H3-W0078-02-00 for the T models. The impeller, 6H3-44352-00-00, is the same in all of them.^6,11,16,29
The timing belt is the item owners forget: Yamaha wants it checked at every annual service and replaced at 1000 h. Look for cracks, glazing, missing teeth and oil on the belt; one belt, 6C5-46241-00-00, fits every engine of this family since 2005.^29,41,42
For an oil change, run the engine for 5–10 minutes, let it settle, then pump the oil out through the dipstick tube or drain it, with a new gasket 90430-14M09-00 on the drain screw. It takes 2.1 l with a new filter (5GH-13440-90-00 or Sierra 18-8700) and 1.9 l without; read the dipstick with the motor upright, not tilted.^29,6,20
Gear oil goes in from the bottom: fill through the drain hole until oil comes out of the level hole, then refit both screws with new gaskets 90430-08003-00 (7 N·m). Milky oil or a hairy magnet on the drain screw means water or wear in the gearcase, so have it checked before the season.^29,6
Check the clear fuel filter cup before every trip. If enough water has collected to lift the float ring, empty it and have the tank checked; the element (6D8-WS24A-00-00 on engines from about 2006) is cheap enough to carry a spare. Yamaha US also recommends an extra water-separating filter (10 micron) between tank and engine.^29,31,6
The internal anodes are easy to miss: there are five in the block of the F50, F60, T50 and T60 (four in the cylinder head plus one under the cover next to the thermostat) and four on the F70. In salt water have them checked every year, and flush the engine with fresh water after every use.^6,11,29
