Yamaha F9.9
The Yamaha F9.9 is a 212 cc in-line twin four-stroke with a single overhead camshaft, four valves, one carburettor and CDI ignition, and one of the most common small outboards on tenders, RIBs and small fishing boats; with a long or extra-long shaft it also pushes small cruising yachts. This page covers the whole family built on that engine: the F9.9F (2007–2012, developed from the 8 hp F8C with a larger displacement), the restyled F9.9J with a multi-function tiller (2013 to date), the 8 hp F8F (2015 to date) and the High Thrust T9.9 (sold as FT9.9G, FT9.9L and T9.9), which has a larger 2.92:1 gearcase and an 11¾ in propeller for heavy boats. The powerhead parts are the same on all of them, while the High Thrust gearcase takes its own water pump kit, impeller, anode, seal kit and propeller and more gear oil. The 362 cc F9.9H sold in Europe, which is based on the F15/F20, and the F9.9 generations before 2007 are different engines and not covered here.

Good to know
- Check which gearcase you have before ordering cooling or gearcase parts. The standard F9.9 and F8 (propeller mark N, 2.08:1) take 150 ml of gear oil and water pump kit 68T-W0078. The High Thrust T9.9 (mark R, 2.92:1, 11¾ in propeller) takes 370 ml and needs kit 69G-W0078, impeller 63V-44352-01 and gearcase anode 61N-45251-01.2,7
- The model code on the serial plate tells you the generation: 6AU is an F9.9F (2007–2012), 6DR an F9.9J (2013 on), 6FW an F8F, 6AV or 6EA a High Thrust T9.9. A European F9.9H (code 6AG) is a 362 cc engine based on the F15/F20 and takes different parts, including a DPR6EB-9 spark plug.12,2
- There is no screw-on oil filter to buy: an oil change takes 0.8 litres of oil and a new drain screw gasket (90430-10M11). Yamaha suggests pumping the old oil out through the dipstick tube with an oil extractor, so nothing spills from the drain screw while the engine hangs on the transom. The strainer in the oil pan is a dealer job at the annual service.7
- To change the gear oil, pump it in through the lower drain hole until it runs out of the upper level hole, then fit the level plug first and the drain plug last, each with a new 90430-08003 gasket. If the old oil is milky or full of metal particles, water or wear is getting into the gearcase; have it checked before the next season.7
- Flush with the engine stopped: screw a garden hose onto the connector on the bottom cowling and let fresh water run for about 15 minutes after every trip in salt water. Screw the connector back on firmly afterwards; a loose connector leaks cooling water and the engine can overheat.7
- Watch for a steady jet from the cooling-water pilot hole whenever the engine runs. If it weakens or stops, shut down and check the water inlet on the gearcase and the pilot hole for blockages; if both are clear, have the pump looked at. Yamaha checks the impeller every year and replaces it every three years; on a tender that runs in sandy water, a spare kit on board is cheap insurance.7
