Dragonfly 40
The Dragonfly 40 is a 12.40 m folding trimaran that Quorning Boats builds to order at Skærbæk near Fredericia, Denmark; it premiered at boot Düsseldorf in January 2020, hull No. 1 was launched that April, and it is the largest boat in the current Dragonfly range. Jens Quorning and Steen Olsen designed it, and its Swing Wing system pulls the floats in from 8.40 m to 4.00 m beam with the standard electric winches, so it fits a normal marina berth. It came as Touring, Ultimate and Performance with GRP floats and, from 2022, as the carbon 40C Ultimate and 40C Performance; hull, interior, the 40 hp Yanmar saildrive diesel and the systems are shared, while mast, sails and weight differ by version. Every boat is specified individually, so check what is actually aboard before you order parts.

Equipment & its manuals
Standard equipment as the builder’s documents list it. Boats were ordered with options and refitted since — check what is actually aboard.
| Item | Model | Manual / page | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine | Yanmar 3JH5E1,2,3,4All versions, standard: 40 hp, 3 cylinders, freshwater-cooled, with 125 A alternator; the model is named in the 2025 price lists, the boat page says ‘Yanmar 40 HP’ | — | The spec sheets of 2020–2024 give only 40 hp, so no builder document confirms the model on the earliest boats; read the engine plate. The engine has its own compartment aft, opened from the cockpit floor hatch. |
| Engine | Yanmar5,1,6Option on all versions: 57 hp (41.9 kW) instead of the 40 hp | — | The builder does not name the model. The optional Dynawatt generator needs this engine. The 2020 spec sheet listed an 80 hp (58 kW) option instead. |
| Saildrive | Yanmar1,7All versions: supplied with the engine as a saildrive package | — | The builder does not name the leg model; read the plate on the drive. The owner’s manual asks you to check the anodes on saildrive and propeller every 6 months, to check the saildrive oil along with the engine oil, and to renew the saildrive’s rubber seal, normally every 7 years. |
| Propeller | —1,7All versions: 3-blade folding propeller, make not named | — | After stopping the engine under sail, put the lever briefly into reverse so the blades fold, then back to neutral. |
| Winches | Andersen STE 46 × 2 · STE 52 × 21,8,9All versions, standard: four electric winches (2025 price lists; the website confirms four electric winches as standard) | — | They work the mainsheet, halyards and jib sheets and also fold the Swing Wing floats in and out. |
| Winches | Andersen ST 40 × 21Option (2025 price lists): on the cockpit coaming, with the barber-haul system for genoa, Code 0 and spinnaker | — | |
| Steering | Jefa1,7,10All versions: twin wheels, 900 mm, composite (carbon optional), 6 mm 7×19 stainless cables, emergency tiller | — | Take up cable play at the turnbuckle just above the engine; the emergency tiller is stowed in the cockpit locker and fits without tools. Replace the cables every 7 years or 15,000 NM (the yard’s maintenance page; the steering chapter of the manual says 5 years or 20,000 NM). |
| Folding system | Dragonfly Swing Wing9,5,7All versions: floats folded from the cockpit with the electric winches; beam 8.40 m sailing, 4.00 m folded | — | Folded, the floats sit deeper and lift the centre hull by 7–10 cm, so the boat can stay folded in a berth; the manual says not to moor folded where waves can exceed 25 cm. |
| Mast & rigging | —1,7Per version: white-painted carbon mast, 17.5 m section on the Touring, 19 m on the Ultimate and 40C Ultimate, 20.5 m with carbon spreaders and fibre upper side stays on the 40C Performance; Ronstan ball-bearing batten cars (2025 price lists) | — | |
| Sails | Elvström EPEX1,11Per version (2025 price lists): laminate with Technora or Carbon/Technora fibres; the 40C Performance in the lighter ‘Nanno’ quality | — | The yard sells Elvström replacement sails marked ‘Made for Dragonfly Trimarans’. |

| Furler | Furlerboom · Mainfurl7,2Option: in-boom mainsail furling; the Mainfurl boom is in the May 2025 price list | — | For operation the owner’s manual refers to the boom maker’s own manual. |
| Toilet | —1,7All versions: manual marine toilet, 75 l holding tank emptied to sea or through a deck fitting; electric toilet at extra cost | — | The tank empties by itself when you open the larger seacock in the aft cabin, starboard side forward under the mattress. |
| Fridge | 85 l1All versions (2025 price lists); make not named | — | |
| Stove | —7,1All versions: two-burner gas hob, flush-mounted with a cover; 3 kg gas bottle inside the wheel pedestal. Oven optional: gas oven in the owner’s manual, 230 V electric oven in the 2025 price lists | — | |
| Water heater | 25 l1,7,4All versions: heated by the engine and by shore power | — | It sits in the engine compartment aft; empty it before winter. |

| Generator | Dynawatt 5 kW1,2Option (2025 price lists): mounted on the engine, only with the 57 hp Yanmar | — | |
| Autopilot | Raymarine Evolution · p70 · Jefa1,7Option (2025 price lists): below-deck sail pilot with p70 control head and Jefa drive | — | The drive sits directly on the rudder stock, so the pilot works independently of the wheel cables and the emergency tiller. |
| Chartplotter | Raymarine Axiom+ 7 · Axiom+ 9 · Axiom 9 Pro · Axiom 12 Pro1,8Options (2025 price lists), delivered without charts; each wheel pedestal takes a plotter of up to 12 inches | Raymarine Axiom Parts & service page | |

Good to know
- Engine and hot-water boiler sit in their own compartment aft, opened from the cockpit floor hatch, and the turnbuckle for the wheel-steering cables runs just above the engine. Engine, saildrive and steering are therefore all serviced from the cockpit; tighten the cables only until the play is gone, as tight cables make the steering heavy.7,4
- From the owner’s manual: check the anodes on saildrive and propeller every 6 months, check the saildrive oil whenever you check the engine oil, and have the saildrive’s rubber seal renewed, normally every 7 years (see also the engine maker’s service manual). Keep a spare impeller, drive belt, oil filter and diesel filter aboard.7
- Folded, the boat and propeller sit about 10 cm higher, so reverse grips less: let the propeller bite gently, then use more power, and practise in calm conditions. When you stop the engine to sail, shift briefly into reverse with the engine off so the folding propeller closes, then back to neutral.7
- For a survey, compare the rigging with the yard’s replacement intervals: water stays 10 years or 25,000 NM, stainless side stays and forestay 10 years or 20,000 NM, fibre side stays (40C) 7 years or 20,000 NM, diamond stays 15 years or 25,000 NM, the beam-stop cable at the forward beam under the trampoline 10 years, steering cables 7 years or 15,000 NM. Since January 2024 the yard engraves the production year on the rigging terminals, which makes the age easy to check.10
- Look closely at the side stays near the lower terminals, which bend easily when the mast is stepped, and at the top terminal of the forestay, which a Code 0 or spinnaker halyard can damage when it wraps round it during furling. The yard recommends re-stitching the trampoline seams every 6–7 years (every 5 in strong sun); owners usually replace the nets after 10–12 years.10
- Original parts come from the local Dragonfly dealer or, where there is none, from the yard’s after-sales department (aftersales@dragonfly.dk): give the full model and version, the hull number and photos. Common parts ship in about two weeks, special parts in 6–8 weeks. If you buy rigging elsewhere, match the Dyform cable quality and the working load of the Peguet quick links the yard uses.10,11
