Garmin Reactor 40

Reactor 40 is Garmin’s autopilot family for powerboats and sailing boats, built around a course computer unit (CCU) with a solid-state 9-axis AHRS that can be mounted in any orientation and is run over NMEA 2000 from a GHC 20 or GHC 50 control head or a Garmin chartplotter. The packs differ by steering: Hydraulic (with a separately bought 1.2 l or 2.0 l pump), Mechanical/Retrofit/Solenoid (Garmin Class A, Class B Compact or Class B linear drives, or third-party drives, solenoid and cable steering, up to 79,000 lb), Steer-by-wire (SeaStar Optimus, Yanmar, ZF pods, and Yamaha Helm Master through a gateway) and Kicker (gasoline tiller outboards up to 25 hp, steered through the tilt tube, plus a throttle actuator). It followed the GHP Reactor series from late 2017 and shares its drive units and the mechanical ECU with the GHP 12; since June 2022 every pack is also sold with the GHC 50 touchscreen. The Compact Reactor 40, the SmartPump and SmartDrive versions and the Volvo Penta and Viking steer-by-wire packs are not covered on this page.

Service intervals

TaskInterval
Software updateNo fixed interval: update every autopilot part before the first set-up and whenever a component is added. A Garmin chartplotter on the same NMEA 2000 network does it; without one you need Garmin’s NMEA 2000 Network Updater. A GHC 50 cannot be updated over NMEA 2000 alone (Garmin Marine Network cable to a Garmin plotter, or a Garmin card reader). Current Reactor 40 software: v10.30 (21 September 2026)24,17,67,68
CalibrationAt commissioning and after changing the drive, pump, CCU position or steering: Dockside Wizard (boat stationary, in or out of the water, power-assisted steering on) for vessel type, drive type and voltage, rudder sensor and steering direction; then the Sea Trial Wizard in calm water with the weight balanced (sails down): planing rpm and speed, compass calibration (a magnetic-environment value near 100 is good, a low value means the CCU must move), Autotune at cruising speed below planing, Set North with GPS69
Oil level checkHydraulic pack, after installation and any work on the hydraulics: check the fluid level in the helm reservoir (it must be vented), bleed with a bypass hose between the cylinder bleed ports and the Shadow Drive disabled, then hold port and starboard on the head: ‘Hydraulic Pump Stall’ must appear within 2 to 3 s after the cylinder stops, otherwise bleed again15,24
Season checkAt least twice a year: coat the pump (Hydraulic) or the drive unit (Mechanical) with a marine corrosion blocker, as the corepack manuals ask; the pump’s own sheet asks for a fresh coat of corrosion-inhibitor spray on body and manifold at least once a year7,70,24
LubricationKicker steering actuator, at least once a season (twice a year in salt water): pull the actuator, clean grease and rust off push rod and tilt tube, re-grease with white lithium grease only, clean the connectors and renew the dielectric grease. For winter storage turn the motor fully to one side and coat the extended push rod with white lithium grease59
GreaseGarmin linear drives. Class B Compact: inspect the mounting and tiller-bolt hardware regularly, keep rod end and tiller bolt greased with a marine grease compatible with nitrile seals, keep the rod undamaged and away from salt water. Class A: check all bolted connections and the drag-link locknut once a year; no user-serviceable parts inside32,31
Electrical connectionsAt installation and whenever connectors are cleaned: dielectric grease in the pin holes of every cable connector, especially in salt water70,59

Operating temperatureCCU: −15 to 70 °C; ECU: −15 to 60 °C; GHC 20: −15 to 70 °C; GHC 50: −15 to 55 °C; pump: −10 to 60 °C; Class B Compact: 5 to 35 °C in normal use, limits −15 to 50 °C7,14,17,24,32
Data connectionsNMEA 2000: the CCU sends heading (PGN 127250) plus attitude and rate of turn, the Mechanical CCU also the rudder angle (PGN 127245). NMEA 0183 only through the GHC 20 data cable: 1 input, 1 output for up to 3 listeners (sends HDM). The GHC 50 adds a Garmin Marine Network (BlueNet) port and ANT for the wireless remote15,26,17,16
MountingCCU: any orientation, on a rigid surface near the boat’s centre of rotation, at least 60 cm from iron, magnets, high-current wires and intermittent pumps, 1.5 m from large speaker magnets; stainless or brass screws only. ECU: flat surface, within 0.5 m of the pump or drive. Shadow Drive: horizontal, 305 mm from magnetic devices, nearer the helm than the pump, below the lowest helm and above the pump, never directly on a helm fitting or T-piece15
DisplayGHC 20: 320 × 240 QVGA colour LCD, 1200 nits; GHC 50: 800 × 480 WVGA IPS touchscreen, 1200 nits (Garmin’s spec table gives a 4.3 in diagonal, the June 2022 launch release says 5 in)14,16,18

Good to know

  • Check the part numbers before you buy a used set: the CCU is 010-11052-67 in the Hydraulic and Mechanical packs but 010-11052-65 in the Steer-by-wire packs, and each pack has its own ECU (ECU 10 010-11053-02 for hydraulic, ‘ECU for GHP 12’ 010-11053-30 for mechanical, ECU 14 010-11053-50 for kicker; Steer-by-wire has none). The Hydraulic pack comes without a pump and the Mechanical pack without a drive: the 1.2 l pump suits one cylinder of 6 to 14 cu in, the 2.0 l pump twin cylinders up to 24 cu in, and the Class A, Class B Compact or Class B drive goes by displacement (28,500 / 48,400 / 79,000 lb).13,3,4,5,12
  • Find the CCU spot with a handheld compass: at least 60 cm from iron, magnets, heavy-current cables and intermittent pumps (1.5 m from big speaker magnets), close to the boat’s centre of rotation, low and near the centreline; if the needle moves more than 3° when you shift the compass 15 cm in any direction, look elsewhere. Use only stainless or brass screws. After the Sea Trial compass calibration the magnetic-environment value should be close to 100; a low value means the CCU has to move.15,69
  • Hydraulic installs: the Garmin pump needs a vented helm reservoir and does not work with unbalanced cylinders; mount it dry, within 0.5 m of the ECU and with no more than 3 m of hose to the cylinder. Use -4 (6 mm ID) hose rated 1000 psi or more and no PTFE tape or thread putty (it voids the warranty; liquid sealant such as LOCTITE 567 only on fittings without an O-ring, and let it cure for 4 h). Bleed until ‘Hydraulic Pump Stall’ shows within 2 to 3 s at each end. If the boat creeps to one side in standby, fit the check valve kit 010-11203-10.24,15
  • Power: run the ECU cable straight to the battery and keep its in-line 40 A fuse (removing it voids the warranty); for longer runs splice in 10 AWG up to 4.6 m, 8 AWG up to 7 m, 6 AWG up to 11 m. Feed a new NMEA 2000 backbone through the ignition or a switch, once per network only, and fit a power isolator 010-11580-00 between Garmin devices and another maker’s network. Pump, drive and actuator cables cannot be extended; the CCU cable can (5, 15 and 25 m extensions).15,41
  • Retrofitting the Mechanical/Retrofit/Solenoid pack to an existing drive: you need the actuator power cable 010-11533-00 (or the solenoid power cable 010-11533-11 for constant-running pumps) plus rudder feedback, either a GRF 10 (010-11829-00) or the rudder feedback cable 010-11532-00 to your own three-wire potentiometer sensor (frequency-type sensors do not work). Clutches drawing more than 2.5 A need a relay. A Garmin linear drive must never act as the rudder stop: fit physical end stops.26,13,72
  • Update first, configure second: load the latest Reactor 40 software (10.30 in September 2026) before running the Dockside and Sea Trial Wizards. A GHC 50 updates only through a Garmin Marine Network cable to a Garmin chartplotter or a Garmin card reader, not over NMEA 2000 alone; without a Garmin plotter the CCU needs Garmin’s NMEA 2000 Network Updater. On kicker installs replace a mild-steel Honda or Yamaha tilt tube with the stainless one (010-12826-03) and grease only with white lithium grease, or the actuator seizes.17,24,67,59,58
