Raritan PHII & PHC
The Raritan PHII is a classic American manual marine toilet: a china bowl on a base, with a large double-action piston pump beside it that draws in rinse water and pushes out the bowl contents in the same stroke. A quarter-turn knob switches between FLUSH and DRY, so the bowl can be emptied without letting in more water. It replaced the original PH (1960–1981) in November 1981; pumps built from June 1992 have a cartridge seal on the piston rod, and the universal kit PHRKIIU now fits every generation. It comes with a marine-size (PHII) or household bowl (PHHBII), a gearbox kit turns it into the electric PHEII, and the PHC (2000–2020) put the same pump on the smaller Compact II base; Raritan still makes the spares in Millville, New Jersey.

Service intervals
| Task | Interval |
|---|---|
| Lubrication | Every spring and autumn, more often with heavy use: Super Lube (SL1CC) on the piston rod to protect the shaft seal; grease the other moving parts too2,5,3 |
| Pump seals | On condition: when flushing gets weak, fit the complete PHRKIIU; piston O-ring, flapper valve and joker valve work as a set8,1 |
| Joker valve | On condition: renew the joker valve C253 as soon as waste water runs back into the bowl8,1 |
| Hoses & clamps | Regularly: leaks at the toilet and hose connections, clamps, hose condition, seacocks, wiring (PHEII) and the in-line strainer2 |
| Winterising | At every lay-up: drain both hoses, then draw about 1 quart (just under 1 l) of non-toxic antifreeze in through the intake and pump until it comes out of the discharge; leave it in until spring. Antifreeze poured into the bowl only protects the discharge side2,5 |
| Season check | In spring: grease the piston rod, flush the antifreeze out with about 1 gallon (just under 4 l) of clean water, reconnect the hoses, open the seacocks and check for leaks2 |
From the PHII owner’s manual L584 (rev. 01/26) and the 2005 PHII/PHEII manual; the rebuild advice comes from Raritan’s technical FAQ. Raritan gives no hour-based intervals.

Good to know
- Check which PHII you have before ordering: a hex nut on top of the pump where the piston rod comes out means the post-1992 cartridge seal (1214W); a snap ring and a loose rubber washer mean the 1981–1992 pump; a chrome knob on the front means an original PH. The universal kit PHRKIIU fits all of them.7
- Weak or no rinse water usually comes down to three worn parts: piston O-ring 1232MS, flapper valve 1228CW and joker valve C253. Replace all three together and grease the new O-ring with Super Lube.8
- Before fitting a new cartridge seal, wrap the threads and flats of the piston rod in electrical tape so the seal is not cut. Fit the seal flat side up, only snug the cartridge (about 30 in-lb, roughly 3.4 Nm) and do not let the piston drop into the housing.3
- If a pre-1992 pump keeps leaking at the shaft after new seals, the bore of the old housing is worn oval. Fit the 1200CW housing or a complete PHIIPUMP; more seals will not cure it.20
- Hard to pump in DRY only means the air vent 1203W is stuck. Hard in both modes points to a blocked discharge line, a full holding tank or a clogged tank vent; test by pumping into a bucket through a short hose.8
- A Raritan bowl only keeps a little standing water when there is a vented loop in the discharge line; fit one with its top about 4 in (10 cm) above the top of the bowl.8
