Volvo Penta D6

The D6 is Volvo Penta’s 5.5-litre in-line six-cylinder common-rail diesel for planing and semi-displacement motorboats. Volvo presented it in August 2003 together with the four-cylinder D4 and sells it as a shaft inboard (I), as an Aquamatic sterndrive package with DPH, DPR or DPI drive (A) and with IPS pods (D). Versions A–F (2004–2019) were rated D6-280 to D6-435 (the D6-300 only as F); the G series, built since 2019, runs from D6-300 to D6-480, as IPS 400 to IPS 650. Seawater pump, impeller kit, filters, belts and service kits change with the version and the drive, so read the full designation on the engine plate (D6-370I-F, D6-440A-G) before you order. Many service parts are shared with the D4; the drives and their anodes are not covered here.

Hours or time, whichever comes first. Taken from the protocols Volvo Penta generates per engine (D6-370I-F, D6-370A-F, D6-435D-F, D6-440I-G, D6-440A-G, D6-440D-G), the 2016 D4/D6 inboard protocol and the operator’s manuals. Two points depend on the engine: inboard D6s up to F need a new impeller every 200 hours or two years, while the Aquamatic and IPS engines of versions E/F and all G engines go 400 hours; and G engines change oil at 200 hours or 24 months instead of 12. For your own rating, open its protocol through Volvo’s manual portal.

Good to know

  • Three seawater pumps have been fitted. The original pump 21380890 (every inboard A–F, Aquamatic and IPS A–D) takes impeller kit 3593573; the later pump 21419376 (Aquamatic and IPS E–F) and the G pump 22901578 take 22994993 (formerly 21951358); the newer G pump 24219064 takes 24139373. Look at the pump, not just the engine name, before ordering.1,7,8,12
  • Volvo’s A–F service kit 22383876 contains impeller kit 21951358, which does not fit the original pump of the inboard engines. Those need impeller kit 3593573, which comes in the older kit 21704967 or on its own.18,1
  • Versions A–F carry zinc anodes (838929) in the end walls of the heat exchanger and the charge-air cooler, which are easily forgotten next to the drive anodes. Volvo says to replace them when half consumed; engines with plastic end walls have none.67,63,64
  • Engines with a mechanical compressor (A–F: D6-350A, D6-370A, D6-370D, D6-400A, D6-435; G: D6-380A, D6-400A, D6-440, D6-480) need 0.1 l of Volvo Penta oil 1141641 in the compressor, changed every 800 h or four years on A–F and every 2000 h or four years on G.92,104,100,125,120
  • On inboard D6s up to version F the impeller is a 200-hour part: Volvo’s protocol replaces it every 200 hours or two years, not every 400 hours as on the Aquamatic, IPS and G engines.99,101
  • There is no timing belt to budget for: the D6’s camshafts are driven by chain on every version.116,117,118
