Bali 4.1

The Bali 4.1 is a 40-foot cruising catamaran from Bali Catamarans (Catana Group), presented in September 2017 as the successor to the Bali 4.0 and built from early 2018 until about 2020; Multihulls World counted more than 300 Bali 4.0 and 4.1 by November 2020, 154 of them 4.0s. The concept is by Olivier Poncin and Yann Chabaud, the naval architecture by Xavier Faÿ and the interior by Lasta Design Studio: like the 4.0 it has a solid foredeck with a forward cockpit instead of trampolines and a large tilting aft door, and it added a fixed platform with a bench seat between the sugarscoops. It came with 3 or 4 cabins and 2 to 4 bathrooms. Bali listed 2 × 19 hp Yanmar diesels as standard and 2 × 40 hp as an option, both with saildrives; listings of charter boats name the 40 hp Yanmar 3JH40, while Multihulls World’s test boat of early 2018 still had 40 hp Volvo Penta engines. Bali publishes no owner’s manual, so this page links the builder’s archived spec sheets, brochure and model pages instead.

Equipment & its manuals

Standard equipment as the builder’s documents list it. Boats were ordered with options and refitted since — check what is actually aboard.

ItemModelManual / pageNote
EngineYanmar 19 hp × 21,2,3,4,5Standard on the spec sheets A-2019 (August 2018) and B-2019 (January 2019) and on Bali’s model pages up to 2021; the 2017 launch pages and the November 2018 brochure say 2 × 20 hp—Bali names only the make and the rating, never the engine model, so read the plate before ordering filters, impellers or belts. Mechanical (cable) engine controls with engine panels and alarms at the helm; both engine rooms are closed off from the accommodation.
EngineYanmar 3JH40 × 22,6,7,8,9Option in every Bali document (2 × 40 hp); the dealer list of a 2020 boat orders ‘2 Yanmar engines of 40 hp instead of 19 hp’, and listings of 2019 and 2020 charter boats name the 3JH40—Yanmar launched the common-rail 3JH40 in January 2018; its mechanical predecessor, the 3JH5E (39 hp), is on the same page, so check the plate on early boats. Yanmar’s manual for the 3JH40 lists the SD60-5 as its only saildrive.
EngineVolvo Penta 40 hp × 210,1Multihulls World’s test boat of February 2018, one of the first; the A-2019 sheet of August 2018 already names Yanmar—The test names no engine model and praises the access all round the compact engines. Read the plate before ordering parts.
Saildrive—2,9All boats: one saildrive per engine; Bali names neither make nor type—Behind a Yanmar 3JH40 it is Yanmar’s SD60-5, the only saildrive in that engine’s manual (see our SD50/SD60 page); behind the standard 19 hp Yanmar or the Volvo Penta engines of the first boats, read the plate on the leg.
Propeller2-blade fixed × 22All boats: fixed two-blade propellers; three-blade folding propellers as an option—Make not named.
Fuel filter—2All boats: one fuel filter with water separator in each engine room—Make not named. The single 400 l fuel tank has its gauge at the chart table.
Winches2 + 12,11,6,10All boats: one electric winch at the helm for the main halyard, the furling line, the mainsheet traveller and the davits (with the pack) and one winch for the solent sheet, mainsheet and reefing lines (electric as an option); a third winch to port for gennaker, code 0 or spinnaker sheets as an option—Bali names neither make nor size; Boating NZ’s test boat had a Lewmar electric winch with a foot switch next to the helm. The 2020 dealer list puts the electric winch and automatic first and second reefs in the ‘Excellence’ pack. Deck hardware on Multihulls World’s test boat came from Antal and Rutgerson.
Windlass1000 W2,6All boats, with the pack: vertical electric windlass; stainless anchor roller under the nacelle—Make not named. The 2020 dealer list adds a 20 kg anchor, 70 m of 10 mm chain and a bridle as extras.
SteeringØ 800 mm2,10All boats: one composite wheel at the raised starboard helm; two balanced spade rudders on stainless stocks joined by a rigid link bar; cable steering—The emergency tiller fits through a stainless cap in each sugarscoop. Multihulls World liked the direct feel of the cable steering and the access to the rudder link bar and autopilot.
Mast & rigging—2All boats: anodised aluminium mast and boom, 17.85 m air draft; stainless standing rigging with 2 cap shrouds and 2 lowers, solent forestay with furler, ball-bearing mainsail luff cars; bowsprit as an option—Bali names no spar or rigging maker.
Sails48 m² + 32 m²2,5,10,6All boats: full-batten Dacron mainsail with 3 reefs and self-tacking cross-cut Dacron solent on a furler (33 m² in the 2018 brochure); options: 50 m² square-top mainsail, 56 m² code 0 or gennaker, 90 m² asymmetric spinnaker, Hydranet mainsail and solent—Bali names no sailmaker; Multihulls World’s test boat sailed with Elvström sails. The 2020 dealer list has reinforced Dacron sails with UV protection, a lazy bag and lazy jacks.
AutopilotRaymarine P70S6,2Raymarine Electronic Pack 1 in the dealer list of a 2020 boat; the spec sheets A-2019 and B-2019 list only a Raymarine autopilot control, multifunction display and chartplotter at the helm, depending on the pack—Only the control head is named, not the drive or the course computer.
ChartplotterRaymarine Axiom 7″6,2,7,12Raymarine Electronic Pack 1 in the dealer list of a 2020 boat; the spec sheets A-2019 and B-2019 list a Raymarine colour chartplotter at the helm, depending on the pack, without naming itRaymarine Axiom Parts & service pageSome boats now have a larger Axiom at the helm and the 7″ at the chart table (listing of a 2019/20 boat, an owner’s report on Bali’s website).

Good to know

  • Check which engines the boat has before ordering parts: Bali’s spec sheets list 2 × 19 hp Yanmar as standard and 2 × 40 hp as an option, listings of 2019 and 2020 charter boats name the Yanmar 3JH40, and Multihulls World’s test boat of February 2018 had 40 hp Volvo Penta engines. Filters, impellers, belts and saildrive parts differ between them, so read the plates on the engines and on the saildrive legs.2,6,7,10
  • Much of the spec sheet carries an asterisk for ‘according to chosen pack’. The dealer list of a 2020 boat shows what Bali’s ‘Excellence’ pack held: the 1600 VA inverter-charger, the electric winch functions with automatic first and second reefs, the 1000 W windlass, gas struts for the aft door and hatches, the retractable galley window, sliding side windows, a second 400 l water tank, the gas oven, the davits and Raymarine Pack 1. A boat without the pack may lack several of these, so go by its own inventory.2,6
  • In February 2020 Bali, Lagoon, Fountaine Pajot and Nautitech asked owners to contact them about a Goiot recall: escape hatches delivered before September 2018 could come away from their frames. Boats from the first year of the 4.1 may be affected, so ask Bali or a dealer, with the hull number, whether the two escape hatches fall under the recall and whether the fix was done.14,2
  • Bali’s own figures changed between documents: length overall 12.12 m on the 2018/19 spec sheets, 12.35 m on the launch pages and in the brochure and 12.52 m on the model page from 2020; 8.9 t light and 11.8 t maximum displacement until 2019, 10 t and 14.9 t from 2020; holding tanks of 2 × 50, 2 × 60 or 2 × 55 l. For a berth, a lift or insurance, use the boat’s own CE documents rather than a brochure figure.1,2,5,13
  • Bali puts no owner’s manual online: owner documents sit in a members’ area behind a login on Bali’s website. If the previous owner cannot hand them over, ask Bali or a Bali dealer with the hull number; the archived spec sheets on this page show what each model year was meant to have.23
  • At a survey, work the tilting aft door through its full travel: it is lifted with the help of gas struts (with the pack), and a seal along its bottom edge keeps water out when it is closed at sea. Look closely at the joints of the two stub keels as well: Multihulls World describes them as moulded onto a projection of the hull so that a hard impact breaks the keel rather than the hull, so after a grounding the damage shows there.11,10,2
