Garmin GPSMAP 8400 / 8600
The GPSMAP 8400/8600 is Garmin’s range of 10, 12 and 16 in touchscreen chartplotters, sold since late 2018: the 8410, 8412 and 8416 are the international versions with a worldwide basemap, the 8610, 8612 and 8616 the North American ones with charts built in, and each comes chart-only or as an xsv with a 1 kW CHIRP, ClearVü, SideVü and Ultra High-Definition sounder inside. Its predecessor, the GPSMAP 7400/7600 (7 to 16 in, from 2014), has a different power/data harness, full-size SD cards, DVI video out and its own mounts and trims, and its software ended with version 20.40 in 2021. Axopar offered the GPSMAP 7410 and 7412 as options on early Axopar 28s (model years 2016–2018) and the first Axopar 37 (2016–2017), and Jeanneau offered the 8412xsv in the upgraded electronics pack of the 2020 and 2021 Merry Fisher 895. The GPSMAP 9000 came next, but the 8400/8600 is still sold and updated in 2026; the large 8417 to 8624 glass-helm screens and the 8700 black box share the name and the owner’s manual but have other housings, cables and software and are not covered here.

Service intervals
| Task | Interval |
|---|---|
| Software update | No fixed interval: after installation, whenever a device or accessory is added, and when the ActiveCaptain app reports an update. Update over Wi-Fi with ActiveCaptain, or with Garmin Express and a blank FAT32 card (16–32 GB on Garmin’s download page); insert the card only after the plotter has fully started and leave it in until the restart is complete4,53 |
| Data backup | Before every software update and from time to time: Where To > Manage User Data > Data Transfer > Save to Card, then copy the Garmin\UserData folder to a computer. Never use a chart or ActiveCaptain card for updates, its data can be lost4,53 |
| Fresh-water wash | After salt water or sunscreen gets on it: rinse with fresh water and clean the screen with a lens cleaner safe for anti-reflective coatings on a soft, lint-free cloth; never ammonia, solvents, waxes or abrasives. Fit the sun cover when the boat is not in use and take it off before getting under way4,51 |
| Electrical connections | Whenever cables or cards are handled: locking rings fully home with the o-ring in place, weather caps on unused ports, card and weather cap dry before closing; power and ground tight at the battery9,4 |

Good to know
- Know which generation you have before ordering spares. The 7400/7600 (2014–2018) uses an 8-pin power/data harness (010-12152-10), full-size SD cards, DVI-D video out and its own 010-1216x mounts and trims; the 8400/8600 has a separate power cable (010-12797-00) plus the NMEA 0183/audio cable (010-12852-00), microSD, HDMI and 010-1279x/010-1280x mounts. The housings differ too (7x12 330 × 226 mm, 8x12 302.8 × 216.4 mm), so a newer 12 in unit does not drop into an old 7412 cut-out as it is.16,4,2,12
- Sonar depends on the letters: only xsv units have the sounder and the transducer ports. A chart-only 8410/8412/8416, or a 7410/7412 as Axopar offered it on the early Axopar 37 with a GSD 25, needs a network sonar module. Ultra High-Definition transducers (GT34, GT36, GT54, GT56 UHD) work on the 8400/8600xsv only, while the Airmar B175 1 kW thru-hulls use the full 1 kW of either generation’s xsv sounder through the 8-pin port.57,58,77,93,79
- For software updates use a blank FAT32 card no larger than 32 GB, insert it only after the home screen has appeared, and leave it in until the plotter has restarted, otherwise the update stays incomplete. Back up waypoints and routes to a separate card first and never use your chart card. A 7400/7600 gets nothing newer than 20.40 (2021); the 8400/8600 is still being updated in 2026.4,53
- The microSD slots of the 8x10/8x12/8x16 sit at the back under a weather cap: dry card and cap before closing it (corrosion), and if the back will be out of reach after flush mounting, insert the cards before the unit goes into the dash. Cap every unused connector.4,9
- If the plotter will not start or keeps switching off, check the 10 A fast-acting fuse in the red lead and measure at least 12 V at the power plug; long runs need heavier wire (10 AWG up to 4.6 m, 8 AWG up to 7 m, 6 AWG up to 11 m).4,9
- Never connect a third-party network device such as a FLIR camera straight to a Garmin Marine Network port: use the PoE isolation coupler 010-10580-10, Garmin network cables only (no CAT5/RJ45) and a common ground for every networked unit. On NMEA 2000 keep a single power feed, and use the power isolator 010-11580-00 if the maker of the existing backbone is unknown.9,51
