Garmin GPSMAP 723 / 923 / 1223
The GPSMAP 723, 923 and 1223 are Garmin’s touchscreen chartplotters of the x3 generation, with 7, 9 and 12.1 in screens, on sale since November 2020; they have no keys, and the xsv versions add built-in CHIRP, ClearVü and SideVü sonar with a 12-pin transducer port. The GPSMAP 743, 943 and 1243 are the same units with Garmin Navionics+ charts for the US and Canada preloaded (from October 2022), not a newer generation; Europe gets the 723, 923 and 1223 with a worldwide basemap. They replaced the GPSMAP 722, 922 and 1222 Plus of late 2019, which share the power cable (7 and 9 in) and many accessories but not the mounts and trim pieces. Yards fit them on the NEEL 43 (1223 at the helm and 923 at the chart table in the Garmin pack), the Jeanneau Merry Fisher 795 and 895 Serie 2 and the Beneteau Antares 8 (1223xsv in the upgraded electronics packs).

Service intervals
| Task | Interval |
|---|---|
| Software update | No fixed interval: after installation and whenever a device or accessory is added, compare the installed version (System Information) with Garmin’s software page and update over Wi-Fi with the ActiveCaptain app, or with Garmin Express on a blank card of up to 32 GB (FAT32), which the update reformats. Insert the card only once the unit has fully started, choose Install Now > Update Software and leave the card in until the restart has finished. Current version v45.01 (21 September 2026); x2 Plus v28.4212,8,78,79 |
| Chart updates | Charts: preloaded or card-based Garmin Navionics+ charts include a one-year subscription with daily updates through the ActiveCaptain app; large regions download faster with Garmin Express to a card. Built-in maps are updated from a card through System Information > Update Built-In Map12,80 |
| Data backup | Before every software update or factory reset and before selling the unit: Manage User Data > Data Transfer > Save to Card; the file lands in Garmin\UserData on the card and goes back with Replace from Card12 |
| Fresh-water wash | After salt-water exposure rinse with fresh water; clean the anti-reflective glass only with a soft lint-free cloth and an eyeglass cleaner safe for anti-reflective coatings (no ammonia, wax, solvents or abrasive cleaners, no hard or sharp objects on the touchscreen), and keep sunscreen and insect repellent off the housing; fit the protective cover when you leave the boat12 |
| Electrical connections | When fitting and after any work behind the dash: tighten the locking rings of every cable, cap unused connectors, and make sure card and weather cap are dry before closing the card slot. If the unit will not start or keeps switching off, check the 6 A fuse in the red wire (0 Ω on a multimeter) and that at least 12 V reaches the plug8,12 |

To tell them apart: an x2 Plus has its card slot behind a door on the front (microSD on the 7 and 9 in, SD on the 12 in) and, as a 7 or 9 in xs, an 8-pin sonar port; an x3 has edge-to-edge glass, two microSD slots on the back and, on the xsv models, a 12-pin sonar port82,77,84,86,28,80 |

Good to know
- Which unit is it? An x3 (723/923/1223, from late 2020) has frameless edge-to-edge glass and two microSD slots on the back; an x2 Plus of 2019 (722/922/1222 Plus) has a card door on the front. The digit before the final 3 only tells the charts: x23 = worldwide basemap (what Europe gets), x43 = Garmin Navionics+ for the US and Canada, with the same hardware and the same software 45.01. xsv means built-in sonar with a 12-pin port; without xsv there is no sonar socket at all.28,50,77,78,80
- Transducers: the xsv units have a 12-pin port, and Garmin’s 12-pin GT56UHD-TM/TH is the recommended match. The 8-pin transducers that yards fit (the GT23M-TM transom unit on the Merry Fisher 795 and Antares 8, sometimes listed by the yards as GT23-TM, and the GT15M-IH in-hull unit on the Merry Fisher 895) and Airmar thru-hulls run through the 8-pin to 12-pin adapter 010-12122-10 that comes with every xsv. Units without sonar get depth from an NMEA 2000 sensor (the NEEL 43 Garmin pack uses a DST810) or a GCV/GSD black box.32,47,94,95,96,97,98
- Wiring: 10 to 32 V, with the 6 A fast fuse left in its in-line holder on the red wire; if you lengthen the leads, move the fuse to the battery end and use 10 AWG up to 4.6 m, 8 AWG up to 7 m and 6 AWG up to 11 m. The plotter is not powered by NMEA 2000: the backbone needs its own single feed through the ignition or a switch, an NMEA 2000 power isolator (010-11580-00) on a factory network of unknown make, and a PoE isolation coupler (010-10580-10) before any third-party camera on the Garmin Marine Network.8
- Cards: the internal slots take microSD up to 32 GB in FAT32 (8 GB class 10 or bigger recommended); exFAT cards up to 1 TB only work through a Garmin USB card reader with software 34.00 or later. Use a blank card for software updates because Garmin Express reformats it, and dry the card and the rubber weather cap before closing the slot.12
- Flush mounting: cut with the paper template, never use the unit itself as a template, use only the screws in Garmin’s kit (others void the warranty), stick the foam gasket on and seal with marine sealant. Fit the microSD cards first if you will not reach the back later. Not on a flat horizontal surface, and keep 35 cm (7x3), 30 cm (9x3) or 45 cm (12x3) from a magnetic compass. Upgrading from an x2 or x2 Plus? Garmin’s adapter plates 010-12993-00/-01/-02 fill the old cut-out.8,7
