Simrad GO7 / GO9 / GO12
The GO XSE/XSR series are Simrad’s compact touchscreen chartplotter-fishfinders for sportboats, day boats and centre-consoles, with built-in 10 Hz GPS, Wi-Fi, NMEA 2000 and CHIRP, DownScan and SideScan sonar. The range began in 2016 with the 5 in GO5 XSE and the 7 in GO7 XSE, added the 9 in GO9 XSE the same year and, in 2017, the 12 in GO12 XSE and the GO7 XSR, which replaced the GO7 XSE with a radar (Ethernet) port and its own housing parts; Simrad’s documents name no GO9 XSR or GO12 XSR. The 7, 9 and 12 in units share bezels, dash kits and brackets with B&G’s Vulcan 7R, 9 and 12 and run software 22.3, while the first GO7 XSE ends at 18.3. The original GO7 of 2015, without the XSE suffix, is a different unit with its own manuals and is not covered here.

Service intervals
| Task | Interval |
|---|---|
| Software update | No fixed interval. When the unit is online over Wi-Fi it checks for updates for itself and connected devices; otherwise download the file from Simrad and copy it to the root folder of a microSD card, never to a chart card. Back up user data first and do not switch off until the update has finished or the unit asks to restart. Current release v22.3 (GO7 XSE: v18.3)59,1,60,61 |
| Data backup | Regularly, and always before a software update or a factory reset: export waypoints, routes and tracks (User Data File version 6, 5 or 4, or GPX) and the settings database to a memory card, never to a chart card; after a reset, import them again from the card59,1 |
| Fresh-water wash | Fit the sun cover whenever the unit is not in use. Screen: rinse salt and sand off with plenty of fresh water, then dry with a microfibre or soft cotton cloth without pressing. Housing: warm water with a little washing-up liquid. No abrasives, solvents, acid, ammonia, alcohol or pressure washer59 |
| Electrical connections | Regularly (Simrad gives no hours or months): push every plug fully home and check that its lock or key sits correctly; close the card-reader door straight after changing a card. The unit has no field-serviceable parts59,1 |
From Simrad’s GO XSE/XSR operator manual 988-11105-004 and the GO XSE installation manual 988-11093-003. Simrad sets no maintenance schedule in hours or months for the GO displays.

Good to know
- Check which GO7 you have before ordering parts. The GO7 XSE (2016) has no RADAR socket on the back, takes sun cover 000-12367-001 and console kit 000-12371-001, and its software ends at 18.3. The GO7 XSR (2017) has the yellow RADAR socket, its own sun cover 000-14227-001, bezel 000-14230-001 and dash kit 000-14229-001, and runs 22.3. A listing for a “GO9 XSR” or “GO12 XSR” is most likely a GO9 XSE or GO12 XSE.5,1,61,60
- The GO runs on 12 V only and is not for 24 V systems; feed the red wire through the supplied 3 A fuse. The yellow wire decides how it switches on: left insulated, the power key works normally; joined to red after the fuse, the unit starts with the power and the key only puts it in standby; on the ignition switch’s accessory terminal it starts with the engine. The blue alarm wire drives a small buzzer directly and a siren drawing more than 1 A through a relay; the GO5 XSE has no alarm output.1
- Transducers plug into the 9-pin sonar socket: Simrad’s Active Imaging, TotalScan and 9-pin HDI transducers fit directly. An older 7-pin transducer works through adapter 000-13313-001, but if it has a paddle-wheel speed sensor, the water speed will not be shown.1,30
- The NMEA 2000 socket is Micro-C. A network needs a backbone with a terminator at each end, drop cables of no more than 6 m and its own fused 12 V feed, not on the same terminals as the engine-start battery, an autopilot computer or a bow thruster; never join a network that is powered with 24 V. The GO5 XSE has no separate NMEA 2000 socket: its combined cable 000-13171-001 carries power and data.1
- Updating from a card: the GO7 XSR and GO12 XSE share one update file, the GO9 XSE and the GO5 XSE each have their own, and the GO7 XSE stays on 18.3. Put the file in the root folder of a microSD card that holds no charts, insert it before switching on and follow the prompts; from the same card the GO can also update NMEA 2000 devices. Never write files to a chart card.1,60,64,65
- Before cutting the dash: metal and carbon near the unit weaken its internal GPS and Wi-Fi, so test reception at the intended spot first (an external GPS source or a WIFI-1 module can help). A flush-mounted unit needs a dry, ventilated space, and the microSD reader sits at the back, so leave a way to reach it.1
